Does anybody know of any places that give state employee discounts.

So far I have this list:
-Sprint 20% off cell phone bill
-Falcon Management 20% off rent
-Dicks Sporting Goods 10% off if you ask the manager

Anybody know of any else?

The restaraunt at the Eaton's Ferry Marina will give you a burger combo for only $2.50 (normally ~$6) if you show up in a forest service uniform.

Can you get these discounts just by having an account at the NC SECU? I just got an account there through a relative and got an ID card and all that. I was wondering if I showed that I got the discount or if you actually had to be an employee.

It has nothing to do with the SECU. You have to be an employee and then you recieve a WeSave card a few months later.

Thanks for the heads up for this shit. I just applied for one of these cards. I became a state employee about 1-2 months after they sent out these cards, so I had no fucking clue.

If you log into the SECU website there is a link for new car buying. I tried to use it, but they didnt have exactly what I wanted. Someone will email you after you put in what you want and tell you what they have found. It seems that you can get the car for right around invoice price.

Ya. Most of the deals aren't that spectacular.

The Verizon deal is the only one I've used.

Sprint SERO + EVP: $24 / month, but you provide your own phone. $38.50/ month for 1250 minutes, unlimited text, web, picture mail. Or you can get 2500 minutes for $70/month. If you choose the Nextel plan you get unlimited walkie-talkie as well, same price.

More like 90% off. I went with a state job. A couple of my friends went to private sector jobs. They work 50-60+ hours a week. I barely work 40. Anything over 40 for me is comp time. They dont get paid overtime ever!

Salary/2080 = hourly wage

Guess who gets paid more to do less.

Exactly. My brother-in-law keeps trying to get me to work for his company (software development) saying that he can give me a substantial raise. The problem is that he works a good 65+ hours a week and there is not job security. Like you said, I barely work 40 hours a week, there is no deadline pressure, and I pretty much have to deal crack in the office to get fired. To be honest, I have no chance of ever out-earning my wife (when she finally finishes her residency and PhD) so a few extra grand is no big deal when stress and time are the cost.

I love my state job too. Its really laid back, and I am so relaxed from this job that I can work a second job part-time for a little extra money and still make less hours + more pay then my last private sector job working 60+ hours a week. My wife is much happier too. I'd rather have a little less money and be a better father who is around more, than working my ass off and coming home in a terrible mood because work is so stressful.

How would I go about getting 20% off an existing account at Verizon? Is that possible.

I was already a Verizon customer when I found out about the discount. I emailed them about it and after receiving a fax of my badge (or something like that) they applied the discount to my next bill.

Plus working for the state, you can retire at 55 with a full pension & free insurance. How many private sector people can say that?

Of course one healthcare may be free by that time. But who knows.

Besides, one could always go to the private sector after retiring from the state and make even more money.
