the used ones i looked at were around $600...that is not cheap to a broke college student

I play and own the three most common sizes, but mine are not ones I'd want to rent out...I'd highly recommend going to a music store and looking at renting one there to see if you even like it. If you do, check out a pawn store and craigslist. A nice sax is $$, but altos are common enough that you can get a cheap one.
