I'm finishing the website for this thing tonight/tomorrow with some guys, thought I would give you guys a teaser. This car will be over 90% wood. Outside of the engine, drivetrain, brakes, uprights, wheel dishes and windows, the rest is wood.

And it's already about 60% completed. Damn thing look sick, it's strong as hell and extremely light.

I'll post the website when it's ready to roll.

Make me one out of corn and hemp. Even stronger and more environmentally friendly.

^^This things isn't a hippy car, it's just to push the limits of woodworking. 600bhp twin supercharged v8 don't love no fuel economy.

^?

I'm pretty sure there's a reason they don't build cars out of wood any more.

Do you roll the windows up with a leather strap?

Even passenger rail cars from the 1850's had windows you could roll down.

I bet that chassis will be super stiff; until it cracks.

When it rains are the doors going to swell so the don't close right?

The Aero8 still has a wood frame doesnt it? It kinda qualifies as a supercar.

i wish more cars had plastic door panels.

i cant imagine the sheet metal wrapping lightweight doors on modern cars stopping a damn thing.

Trying to look at those photos via the website you linked is like stumbling into a 15 year olds myspace. It has to be the slowest way to view photos I have ever seen. Its worse than viewing the best buy circular online. I didnt think that was even possible

Yep, I agree.

I was called in to build the site in two days, from scratch. It looks good I think, but there's a lot of functionality to be added in revisions.

Where is the justification for using wooden wheels? In my mind I see this car as the start line of a 1/4 mile drag. The engine revs. A loud crack is heard as the drive wheels explode in a shower of splinters.

I wonder if the brakes are close enough to the wheels to get them hot enough to ignite under very heavy braking... That could be bad...

^^^ Well, wood is pretty damn strong and flexible. It looks like they layered a LOT of wood on there. I'd be more concerned about the wheel being too heavy instead of being too weak.

The finished pictures of the wheel are AWESOME by the way. The little details are very cool. I just hope those little torpedo-shaped accent woody bits don't fall off on the road when you take it for a ride.

Joe said he's more worried about the wheels ripping through the metal studs on the metal rim when you dump the clutch. Those wheels are solid as hell.

Why don't you just board up the windows on a Grand Wagoneer?

^^ it might be worthwhile to test one of those wheels to failure. (i.e. secure the outer edge and torque the hub until the wheel breaks.) but hey, i'm not gonna be the one driving the thing.
