Potentially, possibly, rumors are for a "radically redesigned iMac" debuting tomorrow/today (August 7). Discuss.

design looks good. i don't like it b/c it's an AIO solution, but for all those who don't fix or upgrade their own computer it looks to be a solid solution, esp. nice w/ the C2D & screen upgrade

they're probably talking solely about the ability to add a DIMM by "only removing 1 screw".

i always have, and always will, hate all-in-one units...i realize macs are geared towards people who are NOT tech savvy (but still require performance) and who are scared of the thought of opening up their computer, but limiting oneself to being stuck with the thing for the sake of having a screen integrated into the CPU, and largely with non-standard components, is just stupid

probably about the same ease as upgrading a laptop... which isn't really that difficult at all...

i wonder if you can take off the back stand and mount it on a wall? but i guess the ports would get in the way...

finally, "Numbers", the spreadsheet to go along with Keynote and Pages.
I highly doubt it's an "Excel killer", especially for business uses, but probably more than sufficient for most people.

iWork 08 for $79..... that's pretty damned good for an Office-like productivity suite

Numbers looks really nice.....
http://www.apple.com/iwork/numbers/

i really like the feature to put multiple Tables inside one worksheet, each with its own grid and separate formatting. Oh how I wish Excel did this, instead of changing column and row sizes, merging cells, using multiple worksheets for data that should stay on a single sheet.

and i love the idea of having the worksheets listed on the left in tree-view style, instead of the f'ing tabs at the bottom like Excel. The tabs are practically unusable if you have more than 8-10 of them, especially if you want them to have descriptive names

OK, not as radical as revisions in the past (to Flat Panel; to behind the screen) but still looks good to me.

Apple is really taking AJAX to the next level, by making it functional and look very good.

Here is a sample .Mac Web Gallery created from iPhoto '08
http://gallery.mac.com/emily_parker
Everything is AJAX except for the Carousel view (Flash) - http://daringfireball.net/linked/2007/august#tue-07-ex_web_gallery

if you didn't notice before, the most recent Apple.com redesign is heavily AJAX enabled. Try the search feature at the upper right (search for ipod or something) - http://www.apple.com/
you could almost say it works better than Spotlight does!

show me an AJAX application that is as functional and looks as good as the Web Gallery

edit - ok, maybe not a "whole new level", since I'm sure you'll find something. But at the least, Apple is showing that they're committed to making very nice looking and functional webapps/pages

wow, WTF did they do with the new wireless keyboard.

the one on top is the wired, on bottom is the bluetooth

they really crippled the wireless one.... like they're encouraging people not to buy it.
Or maybe they're trying to push that one to laptop users (very small, easy to carry) and the wired to desktop users, but a lot of people like wireless on their desktops too...

joe - I'm betting the wireless is more focused to the livingroom media type machines where a keyboard of that size makes a lot of sense. Pretty much everything to the right of "Enter" is used <0.01% by the vast majority of people anyway so it's pretty much wasted space for them. The thing I'd hate about it are the arrow keys

eh also I'm not really sure how i feel about 89235 cords going into the back of the monitor.
I've never been a fan of the USB hub in monitor thing.

Uh... everything Google has made, ever? I mean, it's really nice that they're not loading images staticly, but there's enough markup on that page to make you go "you know, maybe they should've".

I might be missing something completely mind blowing, but to me it doesn't seem like they're reinventing the wheel here (plus, when I used it it was ridiculously slow, but I'm not factoring that into my opinion on this one.).

you seriously think grandma is using the keypad?

I'm a software engineer, a Linux hacker and I use keyboard shortcuts for everything possible and I guarantee you that if I tallied my keystrokes the keys to the right of enter would represent less than 0.5% of my total keystrokes.

you're not going to find a bigger google products fan than me (Maps, Gmail, Docs, Picasa, Earth, etc), but really - compare PicasaWeb and .Mac Web Gallery.

now, granted.... Picasa Web is (much) more functional. But .Mac Gallery is not supposed to be a PicasaWeb replacement - it's supposed to be a Gallery2 or Coppermine replacement, or a solution for people who don't want to deal with setting up galleries of their own but want to share and collaborate on photos with other people. .Mac Gallery is, as far as I can tell, supposed to be an "iPhoto Gallery for the Web", not an online file storage solution like Flickr or PicasaWeb. But just look at the two - Picasa Web and Flickr look down right utilitarian compared to .Mac Gallery.

That's what Apple does. They take products that other companies have already done, strip out all the superfluous features (sometimes - often - too many) to get right to the very core of what the app is supposed to do. Then they master those core features, and finally, they make it look good. Now, a lot of people rip on Apple because they say that UI is not as important as functionality. But I say, if you can master the functionality, which is what Apple attempts to do - sometimes more successfully than not - then what's left? The UI. That is, after all, where the users spend their times (the U, in UI), so why not make it a pleasurable experience as possible.

if its using scriptaculous then its using prototypeJS as the underlying framework.

which is kind of funny, because prototype isn't DOM compliant. I LOVE prototype, but I'm REALLY suprised to hear that any big company is relying on that.

Google's libraries are so damn much better, but such a bitchfest of an initial learning curve compared to prototype and scriptaculous.

$1200 for a PC and 20" monitor? Just a week or two ago you could get a Dell with the 24" LCD for under $600. I just don't understand the iMac appeal. I mean I can at least see the point in the Mac Pros and MacBooks. This just seems like an expensive way of saying "I REALLY LIKE APPLE!!1"

^^^ As someone who is quite possibly going to buy his third iMac, I'll try to describe it.

I want something that works, period. No matter what I do, I want it to work. I'm not going to play any graphic-intensive games or edit a full-length feature film, but I want it to work under any and all circumstances.

I've had my current iMac since the day the 17"ers arrived at Southpoint in 2002, and it's crashed a grand total of once, about 18 months ago. Everything works. When I plug in my camera, it fires up iPhoto and downloads the images because that's what I've set it to do. My dad has a Dell that's set to do the same thing, but when he plugged in his camera the other day, it decided that it no longer recognized JPEGs. Awesome.

Sure, Apples are much more expensive than a comparable PC. However, I'm willing to pay a premium for simplicity and functionality. Maybe I overpaid by $350 back in '02 based on system specs, but for my money, I've saved that much in time and headaches since then.

Not to hate but it sounds like your Dads problem - Not Dell's.

I do not have a Mac but I have been thinking of getting one.
Most people just don't want to admit that they got one just because it looks pretty and its not a PC.

this has been discussed extensively in the past year, and it's no longer true across the board.
Mac Pros and MacBook Pros are on par and sometimes cheaper than their equivalent Dells or PCs. Not sure about iMacs - they probably have a couple/few hundred $ premium....
