can you tie together a floor speaker and a surround sound speaker to the same output ?

yes; amp impedances have been dramatically reduced with modern circuitry.

But why would you want to? Do you have a 4-speaker setup, but your amplifier only has a stereo output?

If this is the case, I wonder if you might be better off just ignoring the back speakers; too distracting.

wrong and wrong

it depends on the impedance of the speakers and what the receiver is capable of driving. The amplifier would most likely clip at moderate volumes if its not capable of driving 4-6 ohms with 2 8ohm speakers.

the speakers will most likely have different sensitivities and will play at different volumes.
