I am on the edge deciding between whether to invest in iWork '08 or wait for MS-Office 2008.

Anyone got any output.

^ using iChat?

I've played with Office 2007, but still use 2003 so much at work that I haven't taken the time to get used to the ribbon.

I downloaded a beta I never used, and don't have a license for Office 2007.

The ribbon is wonderful once you're used to it. It saved me at least an hour on the last couple of NE lab writeups I had to do simply by making the process of making massive numbers of very similar graphs much more efficient. If only it ran well on my old-ass XP machine with it's 768MB of RAM... Ah well, at least the laptop handles it fine.

I've been using it at both work and home for a while, since it came out really, and I think it sucks balls.

^ Maybe you can help me preach to people about how spending 150 bucks to "upgrade" their 160GB 7200 rpm drive to a 200GB 4200 rpm drive is retarded.

That's my experience, too.

Relearning software for work when there's stuff to doe isn't any fun, but I don't get how people can continue to hate it once they get the hang of it. All it does is subdivide the 19287512357145 buttons we had to wade through in previous versions.

I've used it since beta ... you just need to get used to it, and it does allow you to work much more efficiently. Although, it doesn't work as smoothly on older machines (~4+ yrs old). So that can be a problem.

Only thing about it that word be worth it to me is the increase of Excel spreadsheets from:
2^16 to 2^20 in max rows.

MS Office 2007 is FUCKING AWFUL.

I quit using it out of frustration. It looks like they changed things just to change things.

it's called efficiency, take the time to learn it, in the end it'll be faster

it's funny that everyone's opinion is dislike but no one cares to explain why other than the fact that it moved the locations of commands around.

I started using Excel 2007 because I was producing spreadsheets with 500k rows and well if you're not as painfully aware of this fact, 2003 can't support more than 65k rows

So as far as handling raw data representing decomposed CDS index tranche positions for a multi-billion dollar hedge fund - I give it two thumbs up

Databases are used for storing data, spreadsheets are used for calculations. It's entirely within reason to pull info from a database into a spreadsheet..

That's why you use databases and develop a smart frontend.

^^^^ In this case the change is mostly a good thing. Barring excessive stubbornness, the new interface only takes a short time to get used to and is much faster. I really don't understand and can not sympathize with people who freak out when they have to learn a new interface or program. As long as the software isn't being installed on machines that are too old to smoothly run office 2007, your experience should be vastly improved once you get used to the new interface.

sometimes that's not a priority for businesses. why spend the time and money to develop a frontend when excel is capable of doing a whole lot of analysis. it's not always prettiest, but it works

Count me in this group too. Took me a couple of weeks to get it down, now I can't stand going back to 2003/2000 on someone else's computer.

Office 2k7 is Worlds better across the board.

I absolutely agree, but when it's for a "multi-billion dollar hedge fund", I would assume they'd know better than to have 500k records in an Excel worksheet as a SOP.

You don't have to be a "multi-billion dollar hedge fund" company to have 500k+ records.

There are tons of other efficient, and more workflow oriented mechanisms, IMO.

I would like to see an independently commissioned study that confirms that productivity is increased by Office 2007. I would also like to see independent numbers that show that the productivity increase is substantial enough to justify the cost of the upgrade, the cost of the training and support and the cost of the upgraded infrastructure.

I have, excel is not an enterprise application. You, as usual, got called out for making a fucking stupid comment, backpedaled, shifted context, and now are arguing another stupid point.

Why? If you are the vehemently opposed to UI changes, don't buy it, don't ever upgrade anything. If you HONESTLY think a company like MS is going to spend two years of development and completely scrap their Office UI, that they didn't do a massive amount of research and testing first? Seriously man, between Microsoft and Intel, they have two of the best pure technical research labs of any companies in the world.

As for training and infrastructure. Don't be angry because you have to learn a new skill. New users can jump into productivity FASTER with 07, and experts can transition quickly. Moderate users are the bitchers and moaners because they haven't learned the system, just getting by what they do know.

Infrastructure? I mean you do know hardware it outpacing software demands by a ridiculous amount right? And you are talking about infrastructure upgrades for a basic productivity application right?
