I haven't done a drug trial but I did a thing for smokers that we filled out a survey, did a phone interview, then watched a video about how bad it is, then repeated steps one and two and then got paid.
it was pretty chill. 8/15/2007 12:49:51 AM |

bring an extra blanket and a pillow, they like to keep it ass cold in there.
Ear plugs are a must, had dudes talk in their sleep or snore loudly.
Drink water throughout the day, makes the draws easier.
Show up to the draw station a couple mins early, make friends with the guy one number before you and after you. If you're number 47 for instance, you get blood drawn on the 47min of the hour, make friends with 46 and 48 so you can make sure you don't go late to a draw, especially if you decide to nap.
Eat a bunch of food before you go and eat the snack, the meals arn't that filling. 8/15/2007 12:58:41 AM |

I did this while I was taking classes ... easiest money I ever made. 3 years later, no side effects...
BUT .. I had one major rule....
No psycho shit that would mess with my head (like depression drugs, skitzo, other mental things)
I never got sick at any of the studies because of this and was able to get alot of work done while I was there. If you are a sucker for watching tv, then youll sit in the viewing area the whole time you are there and get nothing done.
It was pretty funny to see those not in college who didnt have jobs and were at these studies ... they were easy to pick out from all the college students who were there. 8/15/2007 8:46:08 AM |

I had 2 friends do AAI. I would not recommend doing these.
One friend was kicked out because of inappropriate behavior (he was black and this chick said she felt threatened and called the cops on him). He was paid 200 for his time. He was in a week on then a week off then a week on (3000). They ended up canceling the study midway through because of side effects and everyone was paid 1000. The side effects were pretty severe.
My other friend who did a study with AAI had a severe reaction to this drug. They had to dose you with something else to get the drug down. There was no doctor there and he was not satisfied with way things were handled at all. Between blood draws plebomists didn't change gloves. I remember several issues like that. This was quite recent as in a few months ago.
Couple of notes. You have seriously like 30 blood draws a weekend. You get in line for a blood draw then leave that one and go into another line. It is like every 15 min, then 30 min, then 1 hour, and so forth. Not all of these drugs are on the market, keep this in mind. They have ideas on what they SHOULD do, but the juice worth the squeeze?
I recommend FOCUS groups. Easy money-product reviews, taste tests, I did a jury panel. I was interviewed thought by the EPA. 100-500 for 1-2 hours. You get free products. I would guess last year I made an additional 1300-1500 by doing these.

stick you everytime but they hit the same hole everytime and you dont feel of after the second of third time, its really not bad. I've done around 5 studies with them and never had any problems. I highly suggest bringing a blanket or something for sleep, its cold as fuck in there.. If you have any specific questions pm me, I'm typing on an iPhone right now so its not the best for long replies 8/16/2007 10:36:33 PM |

So where are the focus group organizations around here? I mean, where did you go for them?

First in Focus
L&E Reseach <= highly recommended
Carolina Focus Group
It is too late for me to actually find their contact but I am sure it isn't too hard to find on google.
When you are selected you go to their office. For the panels, it is like a conference room with other people and just talk for an hour or two. They record you and watch through a two way mirror.

I'm actually at a study right now at AAI Pharma. Most of that they do here is testing generic versions of drugs which are already on the market. This study is for generic Protonix, which is a heartburn medication. It's not *easy* money, you earn it by letting them get you up at 5:30 AM for vital sign checks...after I get my dose today at 8:30, it's blood draws every 30 minutes until 7:30 tonight. Then it's every hour until 9 AM on Sunday. No one is expecting to get much sleeep tonight, but there's a DVD player and everyone brought movies.
The draws hopefully will be done via IV catheter they put in last night, but the nurses are doubtful it will really work more than a few times. I figured it was worth a try. So far it's not bad, they did a pre-dose draw this morning and I think they're using 20 gauge needles so it doesn't hurt too much (they didn't use the IV yet...that's for post-dosing draws).
Anyways, I do this for this weekend and next weekend and I get $1,000. 8/18/2007 7:37:59 AM |

I did one once that was worth $2100... now that was a bunch of blood haha. I almost passed out once because I was close to dehydrated before they started taking blood and by the last of the 30 minute interval blood draws I got really light headed when I stood up too fast. So, yeah, to anybody thinking about doing one of these--listen to what the nurses say, drink a lot of water.
Also, most of the drugs I did were new generic versions of drugs, not some new crazy drug. One week we would get the new generic and one week we would get the old original brand.. They were testing for absortion rates and halflife primarily. Or that's what they told me anyways.. 8/18/2007 9:10:57 AM |

I had a room mate who participated in a drug study. If I am not mistaken, it called for allergy sufferers to take a mystery drug for a period of time and record effectiveness, side effects, whatever in a log book. My poor roomie either got a placebo or a drug that did not work worth a dizzam because he suffered like really suffered from his allergies the entire time he participated in the study. 8/18/2007 9:40:34 AM |

^^^ They're not all like that, I had one where it was only like 10 draws throughout the 2 days. Suck it up though, wireless internet + a shit load of bootleg movies (usually theres at least one or two people who bring dvds of stuff currently in theaters) = good times
^^ Yeah, hydrate like a motherfucker. 8/18/2007 2:32:38 PM |

I did one of the flu shot ones. Had to record whether or not I developed a fever within a certain time frame, track my body temp daily for some amount of time, alert them if I developed certain symptoms, and call in data once a week.
focus groups FTW. Also, there are some good online studies. I do pinecone, buzzback, testspin, and icebox. Pinecone is hard to get into, but it's a steady source of $rhodeisland (at least for me). 8/18/2007 2:39:05 PM |

AAI studies *normally* do drug tests for drugs already on the market, or generics of those drugs.
Also keep in mind that when a drug on the market starts production in a new facility, they have to do some of these tests over again on the new products before the facility is approved... Thus these drug studies come about...
Just dont do anything thats early phase, or messes with your brain... sticking with that rule got me a lot of extra money (10k +) over a few years in college, and I would do it again if I was still a student. 8/18/2007 2:40:35 PM |

Yeah...not fucking with shit like that.
I'm bipolar and I've seen LOTS of ads looking for bipolar young-ish folks, but they are wanting to do some seriously fucked up regimens, like taking folks off meds, and oftentimes, they specify they want which phase they want. Well, if someone's in a depressive phase, I'm guessing taking them off the meds they know work isn't the best idea I recall seeing one study where concurrent therapy was required: with their psychiatrist.
Having seen some of the requests for psychiatric drug trials, I've started to hate the pharmas even more. 8/18/2007 2:54:26 PM |
