Kalahari
Premieres Wed, Aug. 15, at 9 p.m. ET/PT

Just when you think it can’t get any hotter, Les Stroud finds out it can. In this episode, Les dips his toes in the scorching red sands of the Kalahari Desert — one of the most extreme climates on Earth.

Leave it to Les “Survivorman” Stroud to come up with inventive ways of surviving the arid air and the oppressive heat in the Kalahari. With temperatures on the sand reaching 140 degrees Fahrenheit, Les has to tread carefully.

Zooming around the sand dunes is a fun way to get into the desert. But Les is driving a gasoline-challenged truck — one that runs out of gas by mid-afternoon. There, with his truck and 50 pounds of camera gear, he has to survive the heat of the Kalahari with just a few items.

Of course, he has his multi-tool and some items found in the truck, including a couple of empty pop cans, a nearly finished jar of peanut butter, a can of jam and a couple of buckets. He also has a single ostrich egg.

In these parts, a person needs to drink a gallon of water a day to stave off the debilitating effects of dehydration. Les will be there for a week, with only enough water for four days. In addition to the heat, he must watch out for an array of dangerous critters, like deadly scorpions and the highly venomous Cape cobra and puff-adder snakes.

Les learns early that the best way to avoid the heat of the day is to do what the Bushmen of the Kalahari do. Find some shade, and just sit still. The nights are another matter. Temperatures can drop down to as low as 44 degrees Fahrenheit.

I think that there should be an official rule that in any Suvivorman thread, Bear Grylls and Man vs. Wild should not be allowed to be mentioned. Vice versa for any Man vs. Wild thread.

saw this episode the other night. i've never really watched survivorman. is the point of the show for him just to survive for some amount of time or to find his way back to civilization. seemed like he just sat around his shade tree for a couple of days, and when he decdided he'd had enough was like "well, i'm off to my support team a couple hours away"

not that it doesn't take balls to do what he did, i'm not taking anything away from that, it just wasn't the show i was expecting.

i will agree that this episode wasnt exciting....but what do you expect him to do with temperatures that hot and nights that cold....i mean..144 degree sand temps

i would sit in a tree also...he also ran out of water and had to make a urine still as well as the ole bag around a tree trick

he showed you how to make traps to catch edible critters and didnt fake any of it

i'm not saying its not a cool show, this guy's the real deal. i'd certainly rather have this guy around rather than bear if it came to really surviving on your own. there's not many people who can free climb down a waterfall - that's not a viable survival technique. just wasn't sure if he normally just camps out for a while or wanders around for a while.

with 144 degree temperatures i was expecting him to be baked to a crisp.

It's not meant to be "exciting" otherwise they would stage things like wild horses popping up and stuff.

But, this one seemed really set up, in his backup hut, and I don't even know if he was a "few" hours away from the safety camp.

to the people complainin about how he sat under a tree in the desert

i would think ud want to move around as little as possible to save energy, its not called NOMADICman, its Survivorman and any dumbass that is gonna wander around in the desert aimlessly is gonna get lost and die, run out of energy and die, or just die

i thought that was one of his better episodes, he used a lot of fundamental survival techniques when there genuinely wasnt anything there for him (how could you not like the coke can fire starting technique) it was good ol fashioned how-to-survive

the episode where he ws in the rockies was relatively easy the only really serious threat was the climbing and risk of being injured under such heavy forest cover (and fereezing rain shelter), there were plenty of plants to eat

He would have died in that desert if he didn't have a safety camp near by. A normal person in a real situation would have died most likely. Moral of the story: Don't get lost alone in the desert.
