It's studies like this that refuse to let the country move pass racism

Quote : | "Study: Major League Baseball Umpires Call Strikes Based on Race Tuesday, August 14, 2007
Major League Baseball umpires are more likely to call strikes for pitchers of the same race or ethnicity, a new study finds.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin analyzed every pitch from the 2004 through 2006 major-league seasons to explore whether racial discrimination factored into umpires’ decisions to call a pitch a strike or a ball.
Just as discrimination in the labor market can affect disparities in wages, promotion and performance evaluation, the researchers said, possible discrimination by umpires could affect the outcome of games and careers.
During a typical baseball game, umpires call about 75 pitches for each team (they call about 400,000 pitches over the whole season, excluding foul balls), so an umpire’s evaluation heavily influences pitcher productivity and performance.
“Umpires judge the performance of players every game, deciding whether pitches are strikes or balls,” said study leader Daniel Hamermesh, an economist who will present his findings next month at his campus and later at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “Discrimination affects the outcome of a game and the labor market, determining the pitcher’s market value and compensation.”
The researchers found if a pitcher is of the same race or ethnicity as the home plate umpire, more strikes are called and his team’s chance of winning is improved.
The power to evaluate players’ performances disproportionately belonged chiefly to white umpires, while negative calls particularly impacted minority pitchers, Hamermesh said.
But this behavior diminishes when the umpire's calls are more closely scrutinized — for example at ballparks with electronic monitoring systems, in full-count situation where there are 3 balls or 2 strikes, or at well-attended games.
Hamermesh said the study is drawing more comments, so far, from his colleagues than any of his previous work.
"I did not know how many economists are hung up on baseball," he told LiveScience. " |

to me that seemed very low, but i dont watch much baseball so i didnt want to comment. id think over 100 pitches pitched to each team in a 9 inning game.

yes i understand that but if every out was 3 strikes and out for 3 batters for 9 innings is that not 81 pitches without any balls?
obviously there are hits and popouts and thrown outs on each side +/- of the 3 strikes estimate. but a hit provides a chance for more balls and strikes. so i assumed it might cancel out especially throwing balls in there. ie if some guy comes in, gets one strike, and hits on the second pitch, a guy that comes in and gets a full count averages out to 3 ball/strike pitches for the 2 of them

FYI, the record for fewest pitches in a game is 58. There were no walks or strike outs and 2 hits Red Barrett of the Boston Braves in 1944

doesnt include foul balls...also doesnt include balls hit into play...ie if every batter hit the 1st pitch and grounded out, even though the pitcher would pitch 27 balls, the ump wouldnt call any pitches8/16/2007 11:32:09 AM |

So the umps are only racist when it comes to the the pitcher, not the batter? Thats kind of wierd.
Or maybe this is just another stupid study just trying to get headlines. 8/16/2007 7:12:53 PM |

I think, though I haven't read the study, that most of the research in this area is in subconscious "racism". The big deal with the NBA referee situation wasn't that the refs were racist, but they were calling a statistically significant number of calls in mixed race relations in a subconsciously racist way. This is probably something similar. In fact, the NBA study is probably much less scientific because there are many more factors to fouls in basketball. No calls, fouling to prevent an easy lay-up, no charge zone are all likely to affect the results without a clearcut method of accounting for them. This baseball study seems to have taken all of the variables out of the equation and looked strictly at a 0/1 situation. It might be somewhat legit.
*Research in this area also includes:
Do waiters/waitresses give minority restaurant guests worst service expecting a lower tip? Do taxi drivers not stop for minorities to avoid going into poor neighborhoods? etc.
It's meant to examine the social current of racism, and not KKK racism. 8/16/2007 8:33:25 PM |
