What countries do you think would help us the most? Which countries would you want us helping us? Which countries wouldn't lift a finger to help? 8/16/2007 11:09:43 PM |

#1 and #2 I'm only including countries that add something of substance. So no Tuvalu and Eritrea in the coalition of the willing.

International humanitarian efforts aside, I sort of had this feeling that not only would NO country lift a finger to help, but most of them might dance and rejoice. I also think that it wouldn't be long before Mexico moves in to take back the southern states and however many other countries move in to rip off what's left of the USA's carcass. But then again, I'm pretty cynical when it comes to this country's popularity with the rest of the world. 8/16/2007 11:34:56 PM |

as much as people talk shit about the US, it's really that people hate our governmental foreign policy. I've met VERY few people in my travels abroad and foreigners visiting here who had any real beef with the US people.
I think a lot of countries would come to our aid in any way they could (remember Holland offering to bring in specialists and equipment to help repair the levees after Katrina?) 8/16/2007 11:37:53 PM |

Oh I'm sure there would be efforts to help out the people of this country. I just don't think that anybody would be in a big big hurry to get the government up on its feet. 8/17/2007 12:11:35 AM |

what would foreigners do to get the government back on its feet? i'd assume that's the sort of help that we wouldn't welcome. 8/17/2007 12:14:30 AM |

I guess my point is that nobody is going to particularly miss the current people in power. Whether or not other countries decide now is the time to invade and make land-grabs is another story, but I'm guessing that there will be no great mourning for the deaths of our administration. 8/17/2007 12:25:33 AM |

Quote : | "as much as people talk shit about the US, it's really that people hate our governmental foreign policy." | Agreed. Although, I disagree with people who say that most countries in the Middle East would offer us aid. Iran would offer some as a propaganda move, Saudi Arabia would offer some because they need us as a market and a defense ally, and a few other states on the Arab peninsula would chip in too. I can't see Jordan or Syria making any significant contribution.
China would because it gives them the opportunity to step up as a major power. UK, Australia, Canada, of course. Mexico and South America would send what they could, but it'd be limited.
Russia would send its condolences.8/17/2007 7:57:56 AM |

True, I doubt that many overseas would shed a tear if the administration fell apart, but many nations would probably panic if the American government itself were about to collapse. People want a weaker America, an America that can be checked by other powers such as the EU or the UN, but to take America completely out of the picture would create a power vacuum so large, it would probably bring down the entire international economic and security scheme with it. We've also got so many other nations' foreign nationals here, some of their best and brightest at that, it would be hard for a nation not to care if all hell broke loose here. Simply put, with the power of globalization, and us as one of the largest cogs in the machinery, we've ensured that if our nation were to fall, nearly everyone else would be hurt by the shockwave.
As for the actual questions: 1) EU nations, Canada, Japan, S. Korea, Mexico, Russia and China (for propaganda points) 2) Canadians (proximity and wealth), Mexico (vested interest), EU, Japan, S. Korea 3) N. Korea, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Venezuela8/17/2007 9:29:21 AM |

Why are people saying Europeans, such as the Brits, would not offer assistance? That just seems sooo unlike them. 8/17/2007 9:30:26 AM |

not sure, either. Even the French would help... Sarkozy would force their hand.
I'm confident in the EU as our allies. 8/17/2007 10:52:10 AM |

basically, that's the half of it.
eastern europe has a hard on for the US and would definitely help, the rest of nato would do so grudgingly, russia and china would offer help and be turned down, japan and south korea would give money, and the rest of the world would be business as usual8/17/2007 11:30:36 AM |

nobody could invade or take us over. Assuming most of our homeland military was destroyed, our military abroad is enough to prevent us from being taken over. 8/17/2007 5:59:23 PM |
