Ok, someone brought in a comp w/ this general boot error:

Quote :
"Started as this error
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM "

So, I followed Microsofts instructions to fix the problem which has now turned it into:

Quote :
"System error lsass.exe:
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct. "

Now I can't even get into the recovery console because it's asking for an admin password that no one seems to know. I'm pretty sure there was never one set, but just entering out of it doesn't work any longer.

Any ideas?

Windows XP Home by default doesn't use an Administrator password. Just enter "Administrator" as the username and press enter.

thanks for the help guys

now, another quesiton

when you run an xp repair installation, what files are deleted and replaced?

this recovery shit doesn't give you a repair option, but i can get the windows files off the disk. i figure i can transfer and setup the shit manually if i can just figure out what files are deleted and copied
