I want a fast "desktop replacement" laptop Sli really isn't necessary just interesting.

with the Core 2 Duo t7200 or better
and at least 2 gigs of ram but i don't want it cluttered with crap before i even get my hands on it.

AND I DON'T WANT AN APPLE.
i have friends with them... and i just don't like them
I know XP inside and out and i don't want to feel un-familiar with my O.S.

<3 Alienware but my DVD drive just quit recognizing when there is a disc in it and no one seems to want to lend some assistance. I am looking at a SLI laptop once I am secure in my continued employment.

I mainly want it for blu-ray playback & burning.
and to connect it to my 1080p tv w/o having to have a massive, loud tower in the living room
I also ride on trains alot which have 110v power onboard.

what laptop do you have and what issues do you have with it.

don't buy a laptop for hardcore gaming performance...

if you want to buy a laptop for gaming that's fine, and you'll be able to do some decent gaming on it, but if you want something hardcore then get a desktop...

that said, i'm a fan of Asus laptops... the G1S is nice, same is true of the C90 (closer to desktop performance, but the noise nasty because of the cooling system)... the Compal IFL90 is also a decent way to go, and you'll see that one rebadged into various other OEM's laptops (ABS, Velocity Micro, IBuyPower, Gen-X-Pc, etc...)

currently, for raw DX10 power the Toshiba Satellite X205 is the best you can get, although for DX9 games I believe it lags behind laptops equipped with the Geforce 7950... that should change, however, when the aforementioned laptop 8800 comes out...

http://www.notebookreview.com/ is a good place for research. there's a thread in their main forums that is essentially a "what laptop is right for you" thread...

From what i read the blu-ray drive is an easy swap into a g1s.

the c90 is a sick idea but i don't think i can deal with the crap battery life i've read about

uh, look into a mediaPC much? i haven't seen many 'towers' in living rooms, but plenty of small mediaPC's that can easily do 1080p tv

so when i made a thread about this i had the same thoughts. i pretty much had to have a laptop, but for the stuff i use it for regularly i needed a more 'desktop replacement' i got the xps m1710, which is a really good machine, but basically just more portable than a desktop. if i were you i would get a desktop and save a shitload of money and get better stuff. my girlfriend (same major) is looking at one and for almost half the price of mine she could get a quad core xeon with sli, cooler running and more upgrade capacity - for example.

then you should forget about the G2S, or any 17 inch laptop. Just go with a G1S or another of the 15.4inch class of "gaming notebooks"... it probably won't give you your ideal gaming performance, but it sounds more like what you want...

ill agree with that - another thing to consider would be the case to carry it in. my xps is significantly thicker than MOST 17 inch notebooks that you would carry around and thus will not fit in hardly any of the cases around. i ended up with ont that has a lot of extra room in it just because so many out there are just slightly too small due to the added thickness. 15 would be lighter and easier to travel with by far for several reasons.

my asus was 1600, unfortunately i bought mine before the DX10 cards were out, but when i bought it it was the best price i could get for the hardware...

and its a good thing too cause this pos desktop is dieing. (windows problems it will be reborn with gentoo or ubantu once the laptop arrives.
