The a/c on my wife's town car has been intermittently quitting, so I thought it was low in refrigerant and freezing up. I tried to add refrigerant, but apparently the pressure was sufficiently high and none would go in. The compressor, however, would not engage. I bypassed the low pressure switch to no avail and unplugged the clutch and checked for current with the ac on and engine running and found no current. anybody have any ideas?

high pressure? what year?

did you jump to the clutch to make sure it isnt shorted out? check the fuse?

fyi, get some gauges if you plan on doing it yourself, i've heard this story a few times

It didn't take your 134-a because it wasn't running. You need an electrical schematic for your car to see what's going on. You say no "current" was found at the wire for the clutch. I'm assuming no voltage either. Just keep following the circuit back. It's probably what ^ or ^^ said.

You say it works intermittently which tells the the fuse is fine. If it's overcharged it would work intermittently while it's slowly trashing the compressor as it kicks out on high pressure, but when you start the car with the AC off, disconnect the clutch wire, start the car and check for voltage at the compressor wire you should get voltage. Compressor sounds like it will run if you jumped it out (with the A/C on inside). You should also hook up a set of gauges and watch the pressures. When you say intermittently do you mean every few minutes or seconds or what? When it runs for this short time do you get cooling?

My guesses are overcharged^^, bad controller^, faulty wire, or refrigerant line restriction.

I did some more checking and found out no power is coming to the compressor from the control unit. everything else-temp. control, fan, etc.. is working fine. I've got it straight wired on the electric fan circuit, though so it's cooling till I get another one.
