Does it make me a bad American to root against them solely to see K rack up a few L's?
Did Paulus make the team? How about McCryerts?

agreed...their smallest margin of victory in the olympics was 37 points per game!
however please believe if they went undefeated nowadays they would have a lot more close games
dont sleep on the insane increase in international talent and competition over the last 10-20 years
i mean after those olympics you had foreign teams hiring american coaches to teach them advanced basketball
hence dream team 2's smallest margin of victory in their undefeated run was 27 points
dream team 3's smallest in their undefeated run was 3 points
didnt exactly have cats like dirk and ginobli ballin back in 92 against jordan, bird, magic, etc8/23/2007 12:23:52 AM |

however, the USA has had a lot more of an iso mentality vs. the int'l teams are more about sharing the ball.
Hopefully putting PGs like Kidd and Deron on the team will help. As well as having Coach K and D'Antoni. 8/23/2007 12:27:34 AM |

Nothing wrong with isolation if they can't defend it. It's about being flexible and doing what works.
I'm pretty sure Bill Walton is sitting in the booth with the CIA Factbook website on Venezuela up. 8/23/2007 12:35:16 AM |

^right, iso can work, but over the last 7 years it hasn't. And it's not as effective over time as good teamwork. Hence the shift back to good teamwork with this years roster. 8/23/2007 12:40:24 AM |

imo one of our biggest problems during the last few years of intl basketball (olympics, world games, etc) was that since we have the best athletes in the world, we thought that could compensate for everything...like we'd full court press a bunch of foreign white boys because cats like lebron can just jump in passing lanes...course when they figure out how to beat the press, we get worked with easy layups
also i think another reason why team usa ball has fallen off, at least relative to the rest of the world, is instead of sending THE BEST superstar players we had (ie jordan...bird...magic...isiah...ewing...barkley...etc) we figured our 2nd tier semi-stars would do the trick...its no coincidence to me that in the last olympics, AI and Duncan were our most consitent contributors and the only players who seemed to always hustle and care the most, and they were the only 2 legit superstars on the team
also we had too many slashers and not enough pure shooters...lots of missed open 3's...and the 3-point line is a little different which can make a slight difference
and of course a lot of foreign teams play together all the time and then maybe add a tony parker for olympic time...we throw an allstar team together a month before the games...i'm glad we have a more fulltime program going now even if ratface is coaching it
also if kobe gets in the zone in a game...oh man those foreigners wont know wtf is going on

^^^Your argument needs to grow up. If you watch the actual game, you'll see that they use many strategies. Some possessions they move the ball, some possessions they look for isolations. They aren't robots who can only think in binary terms.
There is no doubt that the recent teams have not been as organized. However, with the lineup they have, they'd be fools and losers not to push one on one matchups. International teams are not going to be able to stop isolations for Kobe, who was not on previous teams.

right... but are you telling me the overall theme of the last 2 or 3 USA teams were not focusing on having superior 1-on-1 talent and trying to exploit that? If so, you're quite wrong. I'm aware that throughout the course of a game that different strategies are used, but those squads were just taking iso guys and trying to form a cohesive unit vs. having guys that can do certain things very well (see: mike miller, tyson chandler) and building a TEAM out of them.8/23/2007 12:54:51 AM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
yeah with the amount of talent we have this should truly be the year we get back on top
the last few years players like kobe would decline to play...now i dont know if they feel some national pride, or national bball pride, but for whatever reason i think we're going all the way in 08
^dont sleep on the fact that pretty much all the international teams play together for years before olympics/world games and the US until this time has not done that...i think that will be big
look at the patriots and pistons, for example...not the most talented teams (well maybe the patriots are this year) but the cohesiveness and teamwork is huge
we just have to really want it and i think we do (at least i hope we do)

I agree, that is a big help for other teams. Also, not having Marbury on the team is big (for the best)8/23/2007 12:58:13 AM |

haha at least marbury only marks up his shoes 500% over the actual cost instad of 10,000% like nike, etc lol 8/23/2007 1:00:14 AM |
