One group of people posting ridiculous, stupid things is getting suspended or seeing their threads locked while another group of people posting ridiculous, stupid things is getting protection.
Even when those ridiculous, stupid things are identical. 8/24/2007 11:47:53 AM |

I say condense salisburyboy's and guth's threads down to one generic conspiracy theory thread where they can post anything they want IN THAT THREAD and not make the rest of the members look like a bunch of racist conspiracy theorists because half of TSB is filled with this crap. 8/24/2007 11:53:58 AM |

I mentioned this in the other thread, but just in case Duke doesn't go there--
salisburyboy is making the Soap Box main page NSFW. He needs to put all his crap in one innocuously-titled thread. If he continues to violate the rules of TWW with NSFW thread titles, he needs to be terminated. 8/25/2007 9:33:45 AM |

^^ It's not that it's hateful. It's that it's completely retarded and illogical reasoning. How do you even begin to argue with something that is stated on flawed premises? Especially when the person making that argument completely ignores facts against their position? It goes against what TSB is suppose to be.
It's like if I made the argument... Since the moon is made of cheese, why hasn't it begun to mold? What is the gov. hiding from us about mold? It's a dirty jew conspiracy!
And I kind of agree with Boone. It would be one thing if the thread had a different, less baiting title, where salisburyboy were allowed to have his fun. But to have it so blatantly out in the open, and then have him allowed to persist in his insanity on the inside, really would make us look bad to an outsider. 8/25/2007 2:17:02 PM |

ok, salisburyboy is allowed one thread a week right? Usually everyone who posts in those threads know he is an idiot and don't take it seriously, still correct? It wouldn't matter what the name of thread was, those people would prolly click and post in that thread anyways.
So how about now he just has to make thread titles such as "Salisburyboy's thread for the week of ___" I mean its not like the title of the thread really matters, its all about the jewish conspiracy anyways. 8/25/2007 2:22:46 PM |

I'm still shocked he got away with that comment about how he'd be self-hating too if he was "a filthy ugly Jew" or whatever. If he'd said n-gger, he'd be out on his ass. 8/26/2007 12:53:56 PM |

on one hand, I'd say that fucking off on TWW is just generally NSFW
and if salisburyboy's thread titles are bad enough to offend people at your work enough to make YOU look bad (if the nature of your job is such that fucking off on TWW while at work doesn't already do that), then I maintain that it's poor headwork to be on this site at all while those people are around.
that said, it's a pretty easy, "low cost" fix to just ask him to make his thread titles innocuous. I'll PM him.

not trying to be a dick, but you're, for lack of a better word, ignorant of the problem.

yeah, something like that--there isn't a perfect solution, but what I have is the best thing I've come up with (in my opinion and in that of a lot of other people).

not by my hand. For that matter, he says derogatory stuff about black people, too (although I don't recall him ever using the word "nigger"). I'm not going to suspend him for anti-Jew conspiracy theories, and I'm not going to suspend him for believing anti-black conspiracy theories, or any other wacky stuff, as long as he continues to play by the rules. I'm not gonna start suspending anyone for coarse language, either. Furthermore, when you're spouting off the kind of stuff he is, what would really be the difference if he threw a racial slur or two in there? Nothing, in my book, except that he'd be perceived as more crude.

It's not just you that's the problem, it's the whole structure. You don't have to be an old timer on the site to remember the massive anti-N-word backlash that took place in the wake of those comments made about the UNC game. The people in charge are willing to dance like puppets when someone from outside the site complains, but when paying fucking customers make a demand we get suspended, banned, locked, etc.
So again, it's not just you, although your policy of protecting one group and punishing another for posting the exact same thing is unjustifiable and outrageous.8/26/2007 8:27:42 PM |

It's kind of like hate crime laws though... it goes back to intent. Duke knows guth isn't a conspiracy theory nut job, where as salisburyboy is consistent enough where he actually might really believe the things he says.
The joke is though that even if salisburyboy believes what he posts, he doesn't actually ever debate his points, he just re-asserts the same copy/pastes unfailingly. The content of his posts, and the persistence of his lack of debate, I think, warrants at least some of this posting to be curtailed (i think we'd all be better off though if ALL of it was curtailed).
What if, for a very morbid example, someone with down syndrome only knew how to post "AAassddfjgllglsdfg" repeatedly, even though we know they can't help it because of their mental condition, we'd probably ban them to prevent them from posting, because it clogs things up. I view SalisburyB's threads to be pretty much the same kind of thing. It may seem wrong to ban him on a forum where free speech and openness are supposedly valued, but his persistent stupidity does noting but clog the pipes, so for the overall benefit of the system of openness, he's better off gone.8/26/2007 11:49:36 PM |

those are two different and unrelated situations.
the ACC championship thread you are talking about was about 20 pages involving perhaps two hundred or more users commenting on a topic that had national attention. then you had a dozen or so racist trolls repeatedly interjecting comments about how "niggers should be lynched" and worse. this shit was unfortunately picked up by regional and national news and gave the casual reader the impression this was somehow associated with NCSU, NCSU alumni, and NCSU athletics. I even read about this bullshit in the sports news all the way out here in Seattle.
Salisburyboy, OTOH, is just one voice in the wilderness. hes a crank and a crackpot, and anyone with half a brain can see that he's a lone agitator, and the amount of negative reactions he generates shows how everyone rejects his bullshit. so we have a discussion board here that has attracted a racist conspiracy theorist? OH NO. that never happens anywhere else!! [/sarcasm] ... i mean, come on. the shit he posts is comical. no one with any sense would ever think he was credible.
what he's doing is quite a bit different than a Southern university having a large number of people associated with it screaming racist epithets and suggesting violence and murder against a black member of their rival team.
you of all people here, Grumpy, should be able to differentiate between the two. one is serious, to the point of potentially having this site being associated with criminal behavior. the other is just a single fool, who invites ridicule and derision wherever he goes.
In fact, i would say salisburyboy HELPS the jewish people more than hurts. he makes anti-semites look completely stupid.

well that's more or less my line of reasoning regarding him, except that we grudgingly have to admit that he's at least a step above someone with Down's posting "asopidfhapsdhf".
i've got him curtailed to the point where there isn't really a case to be made that he "clogs the pipes" or otherwise intrudes. In addition to my own ideologies on this sort of stuff, and the intent/guidance of the site's owners thus far, I'm not anxious to start playing thought police or making judgements on what posts are good enough for the forum.

^ Because for some reason, his thread always seems to be at the top of the list.
Do I really need to see "will the white race go quietly in the night?" everytime I click TSB?
I'll admit, as a non-white, crack-pot ideas from white people tend to stick in my head more than good things white people do. I try to correct for this bias, but salisburyboy is tainting my view of all you crackers 8/27/2007 12:33:19 AM |

Well I hope this doesn't enter into it, because:
Quote : | "theDuke866:I'm not anxious to start playing thought police or making judgements on what posts are good enough for the forum." |
Yeah. Not the thought police.
Quote : | "the ACC championship thread you are talking about was about 20 pages involving perhaps two hundred or more users commenting on a topic that had national attention." |
Many of salisburyboy's threads have gotten just as long (or longer), frequently involve large numbers of people, and are at least nominally based on topics that have national attention and much more national importance (9/11, the war in Iraq, etc.)
Really the only differences are:
1) There are fewer horrible racists in salisburyboy's threads (usually just him), though there are a lot more threads 2) Salisburyboy has always stopped just short of suggesting we kill anybody 3) Local news outlets have never made a fuss about him.
The point stands that if I went and got some braindead WRAL reporter to threaten to make a story about how the Soap Box is a hotbed of seditious, white-supremacist hate speech (which would be overblowing things in much the same fashion as the ACC thread eventually was), the people in charge of this site would scramble to kick him off. They'd do this, just like they did it to the n-gger lynch people, because when an outsider pokes their nose here they don't seem to defend themselves (or us). They don't really seem to try to explain at all. They buckle.
But then when a group of regular, dedicated, and often paying users has a complaint, we get all kinds of explanations and justifications, all of them hypocritical bullshit by their very existance.
Quote : | "so we have a discussion board here that has attracted a racist conspiracy theorist? OH NO. that never happens anywhere else!!" |
The point of this thread isn't to suggest that salisburyboy should be banned, but rather to protest the hypocritical and arbitrary policy Duke has of suspending people who post the exact same thing as salisburyboy because "they don't mean it."
Quote : | "the other is just a single fool, who invites ridicule and derision wherever he goes." |
