it's probably Bookers you do not like. 127 proof.

the proof doesn't bother me so much as it just has a very odd biting taste to it, and I don't think it has anything to do with the alcohol.

that biting sensation is probably the alcohol killing your tastebuds; higher proofs will do that.

A liquor store in DC just offered to sell me a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 for $1k, needles to say I passed. The beer in this store was ridiculously overpriced so it shouldn't have been a surprise.

^report them. Send Buffalo Trace an email. They will pull that store off of the distribution list for next year if they are gouging the customers.

has anyone ever done an official or self-planned kentucky bourbon trail tour?

^ i haven't unfortunately - good friend just visited Buffalo Trace this month and enjoyed the tour, still waiting to do a few myself though.

successful bourbon shopping in bowling green this evening. picked up a bottle of this year's Four Roses limited edition small batch, and a bottle of Ancient Ancient Age 10 year. sipping the Ancient Age, and it's pretty damn great for an $18 bottle. wish it were available in Georgia.

^how did he like Buffalo Trace? That would probably be my #1 to see.

it's not one of the six "official" stops on the KY Bourbon Trail even though it's only 6-7 miles from Woodford Reserve, which is.

^ he really liked it, but that being said he didn't have any other distillery tours to compare it to. said it smelled wonderful only disappointment was the gift shop - apparently they only have a couple of brands, and then whatever they happen to be bottling that day. and some sort of BT cream whiskey.

My brother, wife, and I did the whole bourbon trail a few years ago, and we usually hit up a couple distilleries every year when I go back to Kentucky for Memorial Day. The tours are pretty fun, and most places give you some samples of bourbons that you don't typically get to taste (some of the nicer bourbons).

I blogged about our trip at http://mikeallover.travellerspoint.com/93/

yes, it was a pretty generic white shirt that has all the distilleries listed on it. If the t-shirt wasn't free, I wouldn't have gotten it (there is nothing special about it).

I know everyone has different tastes, but Jim Beam Devil's Cut & Jim Beam Black? I don't know a single bourbon enthusiast who would put those in their top 13. Blanton's and Eagle Rare are the only ones I would agree with in that list. I haven't even heard of a couple of those.

If anyone has access to the Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch and would be willing to ship me a bottle, I would happily paypal you for it. I just don't have any confidence that even the nicer stores here in L.A. are going to get enough for me to score a bottle, if they haven't by now.

^^ i'm going to houston next week and was planning on doing a quick round. if i see any four roses i'll grab one for you. i got a bottle in kentucky a few weeks ago, not looking to stock up on anymore. i'm a little surprised i haven't seen any in atlanta considering they more than doubled the number of bottles from previous years, and i found a bottle or two here both in 2012 and 2011...

Just snagged a bottle of Pappy 15

I would be up for a bourbon tasting some time in December. Any takers? Everyone could bring a bottle or two.

^Nice!
I've not tried Blanton's before but I just picked up a bottle. Looking forward to it, and comparing it to the Basil Hayden's which I've been quite impressed with as well.

Regarding that 13 best list, I got a chance to taste the Jim Beam Devil's Cut yesterday as well (there was a Beam rep giving out samples in the ABC store) and while it's certainly not bad I wasn't impressed either. Wouldn't put in the same league as Eagle Rare (the only other one on the list I've tried).

^^My wife bought me a bottle of Blanton's last year for my birthday. I like it, though I like Woodford more.

I thought Jim Beam Devil's Cut was not that good.

Woodford, to me, has a very astringent finish that lingers longer than i'd like.

good bourbon blog i stumbled upon over the weekend
http://whiskeyobsessive.blogspot.com/

went to the Buffalo Trace and Woodford distilleries over Thanksgiving while visiting my sister in Cincy. Both were informative, and quite crowded (apparently the Friday after Thanksgiving is their busiest day of the year). Would definitely recommend the "hard hat" tour at BT to get more detail about the production process, was a fun tour.

W.L. Weller 12-year, what's the scoop, is it really like Pappy 15 year only less age?

^ i really like it, but it's nowhere near pappy. similar flavor, yes, but not as complex and 17 less proof than pappy 15. that being said, it's a great bourbon for the price! in atlanta the 12 year isn't stocked many places (though it's not THAT hard to find), but the old weller antique is widely available and it's a darn good wheated bourbon as well.

Got a bottle of Prichard’s Double Barreled and Michter’s US?1 on the way to my house, review to follow. Got a chance to try the Van Winkle 12 year B-Stock last week. It was incredibly good once i mellowed it out with a teaspoon of water. Still anxious to try a Pappy and see what all of the hype is about.

My go-to daily drinker is still the Elijah Craig 12-year at $25.

^^ Keep hearing great things about W.L Weller, gotta grab a bottle for Christmas.

Where do you guys find better bourbons in the Raleigh area? The 2 ABC stores I frequent never have anything interesting.

Some ABC stores are larger than others and have wider selections.

I guess this is all that's available in NC [legally ] http://abc.nc.gov/pricing/pricebook.aspx. Call around to look for specific stuff?

Take advantage of out of town trips where selection is better?
