There are tools for Windows that would let you drag and drop music. I use iTunes, and once you understand the idea behind it, it's the best music management software out there.

^^^ if I get something else it will be the 80gb IPOD

^^this is my first mp3 player... plus I never used Itunes, I'm new to it all

so is there 3rd party software available that works with this thing?

because it only recognizes about 1/2 of my music

not to mention, it's just a hard to use interface and hideous at that

^ huh

wait until next week if you're thinking of getting an iPod. They might release a touch screen wireless-enabled version.

I wanted something now

is there any way to just drag and drop the folders into this thing?

seems like the software they use leaves the titles a lot more cluttered and hard to find anyway

Haha, so a guy actually made a -serious- video about making squirts with a Zune! It seems like he's very proud of squirting

...and I quote

thats gay

I just wish this thing let me go into "my music" and drag each damn folder into a box (like you would for burning) and synch it

but noooo, it only wants to find some of my music... I had everything in nice clean folders... and this software breaks it all up and makes a mess

Ballmer started it.

Ballmer: Sure it does. Because the value of Zune, if we're successful, is all in the software. It's in community [the ability to share music and pictures with other Zune users]. I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation."

if an IPOD will synch and load every audio track I have on here, I'll take this thing back right now

my music folder is pretty well organized and this software coupled with the fact that it doesn't want to find half of my music is pretty much creating a clusterfuck

nice and organized... until Zune found it, now it's all scattered about

I just want to put a whole folder in and go with it

why don't you download iTunes and import your library. If it imports and plays the songs in itunes it will work on the ipod.

^^^ you can download itunes for free and see how it organizes your music. Adding an iPod to the mix won't change anything.
If you have your music organized the way you want it, just open iTunes and go to Preferences and point it to your music folder. Then uncheck the "keep itunes library organized" box (or something similar). If you do that, then iTunes won't touch your library structure. If you allow it to organize your music for you, it will create a directory structure like Artist/Album/Song, which may be what you have already.

i like iTunes a lot. Some people don't, but a lot of people hate on it fore purely idealogical reasons (i.e. Apple haters)

so if you don't allow iTunes to manage your library, how do you actually add music in the itunes database?

Just get an 80gig Ipod then install Rockbox....
http://www.rockbox.org/
Then you can drag and drop files all you want...
I rarely use the original Ipod software interface anymore...

oh yeah, even if you allow iTunes to manage the library itself, when you do the import select "copy music into library", and it will copy all your music over into its own structure, but leave your original version alone. So you can try it without messing up your existing structure.

you mean..... iTunes, i guess? itunes is not just an iPod interface. It's been around a longer than the iPod has, and it does a lot more than just interface with your iPod.

i believe if you point iTunes to your music folder, and uncheck "keep iTunes Music folder organized", it will just keep an eye on the music folder. So you can add stuff to to the folder as you wish, and iTunes will pick up on it. Of course, inside the iTunes interface everything is organized by ID3 tag, so it doesn't really matter what kind of file structure you keep your music in.

^ No I am talking about the Ipod software and GUI...I usually let my ipod boot into Rockbox and don't use the original Ipod Software boot....once you install Rockbox you have a dual boot option of either Rockbox or the original Ipod software...check out the link I gave above for more info...works great on my 80gig Ipod video...

Well, then, theoretically, iTunes doesn't mess with your structure at all. I reckon it finds music and then copies it in its own music folder under a new hierarchy. So your original structure remains.

oh... so you're talking about the actual interface on the iPod? wasn't aware you could easily change that.
and it has a client application (i.e. iTunes replacement) for the computer to go along with it?

^ Once you mount the ipod as a disk drive (which you can do without Itunes starting up) then you can drag and drop files (music, etc) into the rockbox folder....pretty cool...you can even have Rockbox sync with the music files already on your mp3 player...check out this clip from CNET:

ID3 tags for the win. I don't get it that people are anal about their music organization, but don't use tags. If you downloaded the music illegally, it is already littered with tags, and you need to correct them.

People who don't tag their files or strip the tags are idiots, period. Relying purely on filesystem organization is 1998 shit.

The gene pool would improve significantly if they could program computers to electrocute users who strip metadata from files.

Search and metadata is what we use today, and it's superior to filesystem organization in every way.

Well, I like an automatically organized file system BASED on metadata. It's the best of both worlds.

Let me tell you what happens with itunes.

Say you want to upload one song:

"Do you wish to sync with your device?"

yes.

"Are syncing will updated all device files with requested content" (or some bs along this line)

uhhh ok.

"Device is sync'd!"

Sweeet!

*two seconds later after realizing only one song is on the fucking thing"

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK IM BEAAAAAAAASTED

And yes, you can change your registry to use your zune as a plugged in Hard drive.

Survey research from the Eagle Research Group shows most Zune owners are displeased, meaning the player has acquired little brand loyalty. "
