I got him about 4 years ago. His name is Rufus. He's a Chinese Hamster so, from what I've read, he's only supposed to live like 3 years at most. He's outlived two Syrians and two Russian Dwarf Hamsters.

Here he is when I first got him:

Here he is now:

I'm pretty sure he is blind in at least one eye, according to that picture. Also notice he's got those huge "old wizard in an RPG" claws.

But, after all this, he keeps on trucking. He's never gotten wettail; I guess he's just blessed with long life. Any idea how long this is in human years, like 100?

your hamster looks in similar condition to my dog who is somewhere between 15 and 18 years old. as long as he's happy and healthy, he doesn't get the needle.

that little guy probably has another year ahead of him.

Can you even euthanize a hamster? Wouldn't that be like shoving a straw into your body?

they could gas him if you are worried that a needle would hurt him

or just let him live until he dies. he's healthy, no reason to gas him.

why would you buy a pet if you were told it wouldn't live past 3 years?

its a hamster. they don't live that long, but its not a reason not to get one.

seems like this one has a good life, and maybe will live awhile longer

^^^^^ ticks are free and some varieties can live decades. that and they only need to feed 3 times in their lives.

on national geographic i saw a thing about some kind of tick that can live 70 years in its adult stage without feeding.

I remember when you got that thing and I thought you'd kill him within three weeks.

Seriously.

yes, there is nothing beneficial about ticks. at all.
well, maybe being a food source for something but still.

if people didn't have to eat, they'd probably eat anyways.

I think he's on his last leg tonight. He's barely able to walk and he is breathing really hard and fast. I don't think he'll make it through the night. RIP little buddy

I feel so bad because I had to go to work and I didn't want to leave his corpse in the cage all day. I wanted to bury him, but he had to be disposed of. Sigh .

whats the difference between being buried in your yard and letting worms gnaw him and him being buried in a landfill and letting seagulls gnaw him? not much. i do feel sad for your little hamster though, he was cute. theres just no comfort to be found as a dumb piece of flesh clinging on to a rock hurtling through space. i am unmoved by the senselessness of existence.
