No.

They are amazingly good for a team full of players who would be third stringers here, but they gameplanned for Michigan all summer, you can tell Michigan was thinking about Penn State before that game.

Still, I would put them in the top 50 football teams in the country right now.

ernie, should we revoke your Sports Talk posting card now or later
i mean, since the polls are meaningless and all
since they have no direct effect on the standings and who plays in the BCS

preseason polls are meaningless as far as being a fair barometer of how each team will do during the regular season

unfortunatley they do have way too much bearing on the few teams that could actually have a chance to play in the national championship game

hey lets rank all the nfl teams in the preseason or the nba teams...then regardless of how well you do, lets make sure if the top few teams win more games, they will be the only 2 teams with a chance to play for the title

that statement is wrong on so many levels

first, why in the world would michigan be thinking about a game that wont be played until september 22nd?

and there are plenty of players on app's roster that could start for a lot of d-1 teams

the real point all of this brings up is that there shouldn't be any polls until atleast late September.

every year a handfull of teams either makes the top 25 or is ranked way to high based solely on their name.

^^^^ Sorry, I mean Oregon. And there are several players on App's team that are good enough to play for D-1 teams, but most of them didn't have any stars, and would never have gotten a chance to prove themselves for D1.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt07.htm

Sagarin has them at 38.

those polls are pretty worthless until you get a few weeks in as well

you should have said that instead of:

there is a big difference between being able to prove yourself in D-1 and being third string in D-1

App State is definitly better than 94 1A teams...

A LOT of highschool recruiting goes on what coaches believe the potential of a player to be. The elite of a recruiting class are generally heads above the rest. But once you get into the meat of a recruiting class a lot goes on thought potential. There is a guy who from my highschool who plays saftey for Michagan (Jamar Adams) and one who plays corner for App (Leornard Love). One is 6'4ish the other is 5'11ish. They both put up decent numbers in highschool but nothing *great*. So the possibility for App having players that could or could not play at a D1 school or even state is ridiculous. Sorry but their QB could outplay any QB State has right now.

I would love to see App play more big D1 schools...but I'd like to see this discussion in 3 or 4 weeks after both us and App have played at Wofford.

bring gameday to broadcast from there

and then app state would get killed

Almost all computer polls (like Sagarin) work the best when the whole season is completed and not after just one game.

dont forget...before the michigan game against a supremely overrated and underachieving wolverines team, app had gotten waxed the last few times they played D1-A opponents

we beat them 23-10 last year
Kansas beat then 36-8 the year before

they had a great game versus michigan...they're not all of a sudden a top team in D1-A

The winner of one game isn't always the "best team," nor does one win mean you're suddenly better than a host of other teams.

When we beat VT three years ago, were we "better" than VT in general? No.
Were we "better" than BC last year? No.
Were we "better" than GT two years ago? No.

i hope lenoir rhyne squeaks out a win over them to bitchslap those mountainfolk back to reality...as of right now they're 100% confident that they're the best team in north carolina...i wouldnt be surprised if State, Wake and ECU could all beat them right now

Of course this leads to the appeal of college football. One loss doesn't determine a season but it pretty much ends any idea of a Michigan Championship.

Honestly, it sucks but I do think App would have dominated us if we played them at the end of last season instead of the beginning. Fortunatly that's not the case and they didn't beat us so I can still give App folks crap

they could only manage to score 10 points on a chuck amato team last year

one win over a now-unranked michigan team doesnt make them the best program ever

it's funny b/c i'm not so sure app isn't in a better recruiting position than wake, especially now......neither get the big name recruits for the most part, both are smaller schools, both recruit players expecting them to play all 4 years of eligibility and count on coaching to get everything out of them, but App doesn't have the high academic requirements wake does.

I'm not sure if they're the best in NC, but they're not the worst.

thats my point though...their whole schedule is a bunch of teams that always suck, plus one above avg/good/great school that always beats them...until this year at least

because for the last 2 years i've had to hear App fans talk about how they are the national champs and how no D1-A schools want to play them, etc blah blah

if they hadnt talked empty shit for the last 2 years I would be very proud of them, but alas i'm not

Maybe not the best, but they aren't the worst. Based on last week, they are definitely better than:

Duke
UNC
State--they should have beat us last year but thank god they didn't.

well, you sure can't argue with that.
