Given a Cooler Master 650W that came with just a 4pin CPU Power cable, is there any problem with me converting it (by adapter) to the new 8pin CPU Power standard? I've heard of overheating and other issues, but does anyone know from experience?

well if the board tries to draw more than the psu can handle, i could see bad things happening

it's gonna come down to what amperage the draw is from the cpu/mainboard and how much the rail is supported for on the existing 4-pin line

no i don't know from experience, but i wouldn't gather it's a good thing to try, you risk losing both the psu and mainboard.

i dont think you will find a definitive answer on this. a 650W power supply sounds like it has plenty of juice but technically the P4 plug on it was not designed to be connected to a P8 motherboard. You may want to consider using some of the molex connectors on the PS to run the P8 socket. You can get the converters on newegg.
