having to do some for an assignment, asside frome the nice DB access I feel like I could be doing the same things in perl easier and quicker without such a complex organizational structure

It's more about the ability to create libraries really quickly to do complicated things, then reuse them.

i heard you can type in plain english and RoR will make you a fully compliant Web2.0 application. Is that true?

You mean like, using libraries and code repositories?

I mean, Ruby seems eerily similar to Cold Fusion to me, ala idiot language that's worthless to everyone else.

I've always seen it as a fad. Besides, PHP's done the job for me without much fuss, no point cluttering my brain.

^^Yep never said I used it, I'm a PHP guy, I find the whole RoR thing unnecessary ... my comment was more tongue in cheek than anything. Ah and it does remind me -every- bit of ColdFusion, but without the $texas requirement.

I'm not a fan of RonR either. If your looking for a php flavor of MVC, check out cakephp - its awesome IMO.
