Purchased a Linksys WRT55AG wireless router about 6 months ago to have my desktop wired upstairs and the xbox 360 wireless downstairs.

It's been working fine since I purchased until about a week ago. No amount of resetting the router or modem would allow me online, so I had to do a hard reboot on the router. Updated the firmware after the wipe, and it began working again. However, over the past week, I lose internet connection almost every 10 minutes or so. Playing on Xbox live, I've started to have a noticeable lag, and get server errors about once every 20 minutes or so. On my wired comp, it will run fine for about 10-15 minutes, then I'll notice a severe slowdown in webpage loading. After a reset of the router, it will work for another 15 minutes or so before requiring another reboot.

Is this a crappy brand of linksys router? Now that I look at linksys's website, they don't even seem to have the WRT55AG listed anymore...not a good sign!

If I am going to have to replace this, what's another decent wireless router?

try using a 3rd party firmware such as dd-wrt

but it might be fucked.

If i was going to buy a new router, I'd probably pick up a buffalo.

^Sound advice on the buffalo. Compared to linksys routers I've owned, buffalo routers are like freaking gold.

i went office space on a wrt54g and beat the everliving shit out of it with a hammer, for similar reasons as this.

picked up a buffalo g model and couldn't be happier since. my wireless hasn't flaked out once in 3-4 months now, as opposed to nearly every day with the linksys pile of crap.

my wrt54gv2 has never had a problem

the only reason i havent had more than 6 months uptime is because of moving and power outages

Are you sure the problem is with the router?

I'd make sure it's not a connection issue with your cable broadband before I went replacing hardware at my cost. I had problems similar to what you described and it ended up being caused by a line trap going bad down by the end of my street.

^^^ You are lucky then. Some linksys routers are solid, but even within the same model line different releases will exhibit dramatic performance and reliability differences. Many of these differences are not JUST firmware related too.

As far as which one, it depends on how much you want to spend. I got this one here on sale for 39.95 a little while ago:

Maybe i'll try the dd-wrt firmware as well instead of the linksys firmware. Any specific site to get that from? Or just google.com?

Plus, I've noticed when any of y'all talk about linksys, you talk about the WRT54gv. Mine is the 55, which I can't seem to find as much info on anymore. It may be a dud of a router to begin with.

well i just read on the forum that dd-wrt doesn't work on my version of the router, only on version 1

^^^ It doesn't look like Best Buy has that router either, and that's the only store between here and work that I could go to to get something like that. ugh.

Another problem is that the router is upstairs, while the xbox adapter is downstairs. Direct line (through walls) is about 20-30 feet.

I've been reading that the buffalo's have poor range. Would that be too far?

we own them, but that's about it... the only thing we changed about the linksys products is adding our logo.

I've found 'em inconsistent. I've had some that were trouble-free and others that were shit.

make sure it is actually your router. I had a similar problem a week ago (there's a thread here somewhere) and the problem was the cable modem. I just went down to the TWC office and exchanged it for another one. At the time they also had signs up saying they were having problems with the internet and cable service. So you may want to look into that.

One other thing, have you done a survey to make sure nobody nearby has another wireless in your area have you? The two biggest problems can be if you have a Linksys and never changed the SSID and the neighbor has gotten a Linksys and still lets it ride on the same SSID. Can confuse the shit outta your computer.

Also check to make sure no other wireless connections that you can pickup nearby are on the same channel. This can seriously fuck with a connection. Had a wireless connection at one end of campus that was doing this b/c it was picking up a nearby wireless that was a different SSID, but was on the same channel.

I was about to go after work and pick up a buffalo, decided to go home and try one more time, and I didn't have one bit of trouble last night with the linksys.

Who knows.

I think i'm just going to have a price watch on the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162134 and see if I can't get it around $40. I'm sure this router will eventually start crapping out again, but at least not yet.

But then again, I may get home tonight and it sucks again...we'll see
