'04 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 45k on it. I6 4.0.
Recently developed this coolant leak coming from the back end of the oil pan (see pic).
Theres two bolts right there that hold the oil pan on, and it looks like its coming from those, but i cant really tell for sure.
Any ideas why coolant is leaking back there????

you sure it's not running down the block from the water pump or somewhere higher up, hoses, t-stat, etc.? 9/17/2007 10:00:03 AM |

fairly certain.
id think that if it were coming outta the weep hole, then there would be a trail somewhere. being that it would have to go from the front of the engine all the way to back.
i pray its only the water pump, or tstat.
ive read some shit about freeze plugs going bad, but have never heard of them. anyone know a little more? 9/17/2007 10:07:45 AM |

sorry, i missed this thread. freeze plug would have been my guess too. nothing else it really could be back there. unless it had cracked the block/head or blown the head gasket just right. all of which are very unlikely.
seems like the ones that require the most work to replace (hidden behind the transmission) always go first. 9/21/2007 3:38:30 PM |

^ I got lucky. My 4.0 ran about 130k miles before I decided to stroke it (at which time I replaced all freeze plugs obviously), never had one go bad on me. 9/22/2007 1:28:34 PM |
