are there any...i mean, really? here's the deal:

i don't know coldfusion...in fact, i haven't even looked at it in years...i do, however, know PHP

we currently have a site being handed to us that's done in coldfusion...it is NOT, however, complete and only consists of about 50 pages...they want me to learn coldfusion so that i can work on this site

i don't have a problem with other people paying me to learn something new, but is this a waste of time? i mean, i haven't really seen/read a lot supporting coldfusion over PHP

none. You can convert the site over to PHP in a couple of hours. Seriously it's that easy.

you and i both know that...convincing those who sign my paycheck (and those above me who make decisions on my behalf) is a completely different matter

i guess i'm resigned to learning a relatively useless language?

EDIT: do you have to pay for each version of coldfusion or is it a one-time deal?

NOTHING wrong with (seriously, i don't mind)...but if i already know a language that is more than comparable (which is, in fact, superior), why would i "waste" my time? again, i'll end up doing it because they have no intention of switching, but i'd rather spend time becoming VERY good with PHP

Show them that you can scratch the site and bring it back to speed in PHP with very little overheard.

Then show them the scalability, infastructure and licensing advantages of PHP/Apache.

Well, ColdFusion isn't horrible, just not as really advanced as PHP is ... or maybe I'm better off saying, it's hard to do the easy things in CF, but easier (more automated) to do the hard things ... and on the flip side, it's easy to do the easy things in PHP and harder (more technical, you have more control) to do the hard things. There are so many other positives and negatives about the two ... but overall, PHP is definitely -not- gimped just because it's "free", it's arguably the best.

That said, I'd try to convince them to use PHP ... but fwiw there are some really large companies that use CF ... so in that sense, it might be worth knowing if you want more job options or to be worth more.
