Any good deals an a 600cc motorcycle - GSR-X, CBR, Ninja, Katana, R6 (the like)
I'd like one with a clean title, never laid down, 2000 or newer - looking for a starter bike thats in good condition for less than $6000
is it possible? 9/19/2007 3:42:42 PM |

what you're describing is not a good starter bike.
get an SV650 for $2500-3000...more than enough bike to keep you busy for a good while, and definitely the best bang for the buck. you'll learn faster on it than you will a race-replica. it sounds awesome. the older ones are plentiful and don't depreciate much any more. you won't fuck up all of the plastic when you drop it, and it will only be half as expensive of a motorcycle when you drop it.
ride it for at least a year, then if you still want a race-rep, go get a hot 600, or maybe a GSX-R 750.
i'll put this in perspective for you: I've owned 3 motorcycles and ridden a dozen or two more. I've ridden old CB350s and SECA 400s, I've ridden a 954RR and a later model R1. I've ridden Valkyries and Gold Wings. I've ridden a whole variety of 600cc sportbikes.
The last bike I owned was a GSX-R 750. I've done 110 mph wheelies, scratched footpegs at 100 mph through 35 mph corners, and wound it up to 170 mph. I've been in 4 wrecks. I'm NOT some weenie trying to be the fun police. I will tell you, though--I plan to go back to a 600cc bike for my next serious sportbike. I have more fun on a middleweight than anything else. Furthermore, 600s are so fast and focused nowadays that I'm planning on buying an SV650 to ride for a while first, just to get back in the groove (I've ridden sporadically, but I haven't owned a bike in 3 years).

4.5 - 5.2k is reasonable. 07+ 600RR's are in higher demand and is making the older gens drop in price a bit. 9/22/2007 5:05:40 AM |

seems low to me but at the same time this time of year is a bad time to sell a bike. in the spring i would probably be able to get the best price. i have no problem holding it until then 9/22/2007 7:33:54 AM |

you're a noob to think aftermarket parts and gear, will affect the total selling price of a motorcycle. It adds almost no real net gain, makes a better selling feature, but ultimately you could sell the bike in stock form for the price I listed, then sell the after market stuff separate to recoup the value. Otherwise, most people won't really see the value, as though as it's expected to be like come with gear and after market stuff. Honestly, after market and extra stuff with the bike makes the bike sell quicker, not raise the value.
New tires and good maintenance don't mean shit on a bike now days, specially for a mass produced jap made bike. Ducati's are different, but their brand following are more towards up scale riders. Most Ducati followers may not be "motorcycle" smart, but they all know the brand as being alluring, like a Fad. But you get the few true riders that actually take advantage of the engineering marvels.
You may get a better price in the spring time instead of selling it now, but to think you can actually get 6k for what is now a 4 year old bike that sold for 8300-8800 new and retain 75% of it's value isn't realistic. Remember, when you ride it off the lot, it depreciates by 2-3 grand in the first year.
Also most FI bikes still have the large price gap between the carbed bikes. Even now, it's almost ridiculous that people still expect 4k for an old f4i or an 01 gixxer. Those bikes are almost 8 years old, I don't care if they are FI or in good condition, they should be half that in value, yet people buy them because it's FI. Jap companies have already flooded the market with FI bikes, specially Honda, but people still think it's a great selling point and touting it like its some sort of new and futuristic technology that's very limited in the motorcycle world... FI was invented when? 1950's? First FI bike was in the 70's or early 80's? Yeah... it's not that new.
And don't get me started on wrecked bikes. Those idiots think they can get top dollar for POS'. I mean some guy wanted 3900 for a wrecked 06 gixxer that had NO SALVAGEABLE parts. Even the frame and engine was damaged beyond repair. Another shop in SC wanted 4900 for a wrecked 05 gixxer 750 that required a new frame, the whole front end assembly, and plastics. Just the parts to repair the bike would equal 3-4 grand easily. 9/23/2007 6:59:27 AM |

^^ damn, your bike got stolen? been there. thank God for theft insurance.
GSX-R 750 is a killer motorcycle. I had an '02, and I've ridden an '04 (or was it an '05?) a few times.
a modern 600 will be a big performance step-up from an SV-650, though.
big bikes are fun as a novelty, but a 600 is better for 95% of sportbikers (and certainly better bang for the buck). 9/23/2007 6:08:51 PM |
