It's just locking up and none of the controls work, the picture is frozen... I'm not getting the flashing red lights that most talk about, but something is obviously wrong. Any suggestions?

my roommates did that like 2 or 3 weeks ago. Like it wasnt over heating or anyting cuase sometimes it would run for hours and not lock up, then other times it would lock up 5 secs after turning it on. He sent it back into microsoft and they said it was the dvd drive problem. Something like 1/3 or 1/4 of all 360s are havin this problem now cuase one of the manufacturing companies wasnt up to par with microsofts standards. just call up microsoft and tell em the deal, They send you a box with pre-paid shipping and packaging materials. You ship it back and then it arrives back at your place like a week or so later with a fixed xbox and a free 1 month xbox live card. He didnt have to pay for crap. Microsoft has some good customer service on the 360s

They should just start rating a X360 game's graphics by how quickly it will brick your 360.

I have a buddy that has a 360 and this happens only with Rainbow 6 Vegas. Other games appear to work just fine, but whenever Rainbow 6 is put in, we can get all of our settings entered, load the level, start playing and 10 seconds later, it freezes. Could this be a game issue or the box?

Say this Xbox was bought about a year go and has never been hooked up to the 'net. Will any form of updates install (once connected to the 'net) to help this locking up problem or is it strickly a hardware issue? I'm a Xbox n00b.

if it is overheating, are components getting fried? What does MS do to fix this? Add cooling fans and heatsinks?

from what i hear the solder would get fucked up cuz it was cheap and crappy. they probably resolder and/or use the better stuff. i doubt they always install the new heatsinks.

good for u...

in my opinion though i just wait till there are a few games i want to won before i purchase a console because yes the price will go down but all they are doing is depreciating the value based on how long till the console isn't worth anything.. basically think of it as an up-front 5 year lease... and for every year you wast sure the price will go down but you're also only leasing it for 4 years.

Eh, true, but I still can't justify spending that much cash on a gaming box no matter how much disposable cash I have on hand.

I'd much rather throw anything over 300 at a new desktop rig.

^^ I'm saying I put a limit on console buying at 300, period.

If I'm spending more than that I'm going all out and buying a real gaming machine.

It's not overheating... mine did it for the first time when I turned it on after it had been sitting for a day...

It was probably the GPU issue which is at least partly a heat issue.

Overheating isn't really the right way to describe it, but it's the right general ballpark.
