"Summary: Discussing his recent dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at the Harlem restaurant Sylvia's, Bill O'Reilly reported that he "couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship." O'Reilly added: "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea.' " "

Alright, I haven't seen the actual video, but to be honest, this isn't THAT racist. I certainly understand WHY it has been taken to be racist. Thing is, O'Reilly says so many stupid, more directly racist things that I don't think this really warrants the outrage it's getting.

if it's run by blacks, does that mean the black servers actually get tipped more than 5% by the primarily black patronship? I mean, blacks tip poorly (or not at all,) as a means of collecting reparations from whites, right?

i'm going to have to side with O'Reilly on this one. If you listen to the entire clip, you will hear it's a discussion with prominent black journalist/author Juan Williams. The quotes are taken completely out of context. In fact, this clip is probably the most well rational and calm i've ever heard O'Reilly. Like other have said, if you want to get mad at O'Reilly (and you probably should) there are plenty of other much more ridiculous things he said on a daily basis.

Media Matters, what a joke. The comments in question were part of a conversation with Juan Williams of NPR about racism and how racism is wrong. Williams and others have denounced the attacks on O'Reilly.

Wait, I've pinpointed the problem:

I wish George Soros would burn to death, just like his fellow Jews he helped send to the Death Camps did when he collaborated with the Nazis in the 1940s.

He truly is a waste of organic matter of the worst kind.

Hang on. I don't look at the video, but post the link to it. Then I give O'Reilly the benefit of the doubt after reading the transcript.

So... what problem are you pointing out? Are you sure it's a problem? Are sure it's not nothing?

The problem with the statement is that he says he was SUPRISED that the place was like any other restaurant...as if he expected people to be bouncing off the walls or throwing food or something? Thats the racism.

No, if you watch the video then you will see that wasn't what he was saying at all.

He was saying, with the way rap music and thug life is glorified, he and other whites should be surprised by a black owned restaurant with black patrons being normal. Because that's how blacks are portrayed in society/tv/music/news.

How about a new rule for this thread... if you haven't watched the video, then STFU.

The problem isn't even as much what he said it is that he is too arrogant to realize what he said was stupid so he is digging his heels in and acting like he was doing the black race some sort of favor. Which, in turn, is another stupid mistake. Bill O'Reilly is a joke anyways so I am surprised that anyone takes anything he says seriously. No wonder Hooksaw loves him so much.

was this some sort of rap-themed restaurant?

I haven't read or heard anything about this except this post and I don't see the connection between rap music and a black owned restaurant?

I really don't understand why Bill O'Reilly is getting heat for this.

Because, black folks don't OWN restaurants ... they WORK in them.

I can see why Bill might have been confused, but if anything, he was being *charitable*

o i watched the video and what you just said is even more racist than the part i was talking about. If you think rap music represents black people you are IGNORANT. If you base any race off of something you see on tv music news you are IGNORANT.

Does he expect sonny and the boys to come pull a rat out and send him swimming with a fishes when he eats italian?

Does he expect a karate fight to break out when he eats in chinatown?

Does he expect a new sheriff to kick down the door of every white restaurant he eats in?

Should people of other races expect those things?

and the most retarded part of the whole thing is how he thinks other whites should be just as ignorant as him and also be surprised that black people don't eat the way "rap music would lead you to believe". This is clearly one of the dumbest things i've heard in a while. It's definitely up there with south africans and the Iraq because it has nothing to do with what he's talking about.

you and oreilly and joe schmoe are all pitifully ignorant

Hey! I've actually eaten at Sylvia's ...

It's a restaurant in Harlem that's been featured on the likes of Oprah as having great Soul Food. So, in the context of what O'Reilly was trying to say, he was quite off-base. Slyvia's is not your typical joint. It's a nationally-recognized place that draws tourists. I don't see how it can be compared to some mythical "average" restaurant in Harlem.

That's not say that the "average" Harlem restaurant is full of miscreants, just that O'Reilly doesn't know what he's talking about. No surprises there.

(and for the record, Sylvia's isn't worth the visit to Harlem)

i tend to agree with olbermann on a lot of issues, but i think both of them are idiots in this situation.

^^ I know about Olbermann and O'Rielly's ongoing spat, but I was curious if Olbermann has weighed in on this particular incident. I really like Olbermann, and O'Reilly can go to hell for all i care, but I would like to see Olbermann stick up for O'Reilly in this instance, because I don't think O'Reilly is particularly in the wrong. at least not for as much shit as he's getting. And if Olbermann would admit that in this case, O'Reilly is not in the wrong and it is the media that is purposefully misconstruing what he said, in the end it would make Olbermann come out with more credibility.

1. The premise is kinda hilarious. O'Reilly and Sharpton sharing a meal. Weird. At a soul food jiont. Weirder. I mean, that conversation musta been classic...

2. I understood exactly what O'Reilly was saying. He kinda struggles with expressing anything other than "douchebag" and "angry douchebag." But still, it was evident to me that he was trying to say...given all the inyoface black anticulture he sees hyped up in the media, he was "surprised" (sarcasm, hyperbole, etc...) at the behavior of the folks in this particular establishment. Granted, he went on and on to present this point, but I believe it was because he was so pathetically proud of himself for pointing out that black folks and white folks are largely alike, regardless of the media portrayals.

3. The out-of-context clip is hilarious and fit for all sorts of great jokes. But anybody who would run with it and try to use it to seriously call him a racist is just plain wrong.

^^mathman gets the hyperbole. But Edwards used it on a sensitive topic and might turn folks off with it.

mathman is right. Edwards is screwing himself by using hyperbole like that.

Especially considering the black vote isn't particularly strong these days.

Lots of democrats get their marching orders from Media Matters. John Kerry, for example, you know, the guy who lied about what he saw in Vietnam when he lashed out at Rush Limbaugh for attacking another fellow liar soldier who claimed all kinds of atrocities in Iraq when he was in fact kicked out of boot camp, one Jesse MacBeth, who was just sentenced to 5 months in prison for lying about his military record while being propped up as a hero by the anti-war left. Rush called MacBeth a phony soldier, Media Matters took his words out of context as if Rush was calling every anti-war soldier as being phony, and many top Democrats have ran with it, without even reading the transcript or listening to the context of the discussion.
