"Maryland coach accuses Rutgers of dirty strategy
Wednesday, October 03, 2007
BY TOM LUICCI
Star-Ledger Staff

Rutgers' loss to Maryland last Saturday is like a bad crab cake now: It just keeps repeating on the Knights.

One day after Duke was reprimanded by the ACC for violating league policy by giving Rutgers the game tape from the Maryland-Wake Forest game, Terps coach Ralph Friedgen accused the Knights of intentionally trying to injure starting quarterback Jordan Steffy during the game.

True freshman Joe Lefeged -- ironically, a Maryland native -- delivered the helmet-to-helmet blow near the end of the first half that sent Steffy out of the game with a slight concussion and a shoulder injury.

Though ACC spokesperson Mike Finn said Lefeged's contact was an "unintended, not purposeful hit," he said a penalty should have been called on the play by the ACC crew working the game. No flag was thrown on the play.

Friedgen, at his weekly press conference yesterday, said "(Rutgers) went after him (Steffy). They were trying to take him out of the game."

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano declined to comment on Friedgen's accusation.

Meanwhile, Duke was found to have violated ACC policy by providing Rutgers with a tape of the Maryland-Wake Forest game after Maryland and Rutgers agreed only to exchange the first three game tapes. Rutgers had only played three games to that point. Wake Forest was Maryland's fourth game.

According to several published reports, a member of Duke's video staff owed a favor to a member of the Rutgers staff and paid the debt by delivering the coaches' copy of the Maryland-Wake game. Duke plays Wake Forest on Saturday and had the tape of the Wake-Maryland game as part of its preparation.

ACC policy states that schools must notify other league schools when a nonconference opponent asks for game film. The Big East has the same policy.

"Yes, I was disappointed, especially when I know two other people in the league turned (Rutgers) down (about providing the game tape)," Friedgen said at his press conference. "I felt like if you're in the league you should abide by the rules."

Schiano, asked after practice yesterday if the "favor" by Duke was payback for Rutgers providing the Blue Devils with film on North Carolina, the Knights' opening-game opponent last year, issued an emphatic "no."

"They asked me about that from Baltimore and I said that's between Maryland and the ACC," he said of the situation. "To answer your question, it's not that. That isn't it. As far as I'm concerned there is zero issue. Zero."

According to the Washington Times, Mitch Wilkens, Duke's football video coordinator, apologized to Friedgen over the incident. Wilkens worked at Maryland from 2001-03. The paper said Wake Forest and Georgia Tech declined to provide Rutgers with the same game tape when asked.

The only punishment Duke is expected to receive is the public reprimand from the ACC. "

Rutgers has become notorious for playing dirty and for having terrible fans. I am not surprised by any of Fridge's comments. But its also kinda funny coming from Maryland.

Maryland has become notorious for playing dirty and for having terrible fans. That's why the thread title is appropriate.

Hmm...Fridge complaining about players delivering illegal hits by leading with their helmets. He didn't have a problem with Leroy Ambush leading with his helmet when he hit T.A. during the 2003 Maryland game.
