I've got a job in NYC (Lower Manhattan - Wall St) and am looking at a place to rent.
I'm willing to shell out extra $ for a place in Manhattan (found some on the Upper East Side - Studios for about $1500-1700/mo) but what else is out there. I've heard there's lots of young professionals in Hoboken, and there seems to be good deals (~1200/mo) in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Jersey City, etc...WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THESE PLACES?
Thanks for your input in advance. 10/4/2007 10:34:07 PM |

east new york
ok seriously...
get roommates. Do not spend 1500 on a studio in the ues by yourself. It will be shitty and far from the subway and most likely have a huge broker fee (15% of annual rent).
also getting from the upper east side to wall st is a complete bitch and will take you around an hour or more during rush hour. If you want an area similar to the upper east side check out Brooklyn Heights. It will take you 5-10min on the 2 or 3 train to get to wall st.
If you have any questions seriously pm me because you can get fucked in the ass by brokers.

i lived in hoboken, lots of young professionals, lots of bars, i'd recommend it. other than that, get like a 2br with a roomie instead of a studio in manhattan. 10/4/2007 11:11:09 PM |

without a doubt do not live by yourself. You will be screwing yourself over.
and dont spend more just to live in manhattan. Its not worth it unless you get a great deal. 10/4/2007 11:16:02 PM |

Hoboken can be pretty expensive - it's far off from Manhattan rents
Jersey City is quite a bit better if you go away from Newport/Pavonia
Always a ton of people looking for roomies here: http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/aap/
I'm looking to buy a place in Paulus Hook or Van Vorst park atm...been looking for awhile but I think the current market will unveil some good deals soon...
If you don't want Jersey then pretty much you have to go to LIC/Astoria or the couple of good/ still affordable neighborhoods in Brooklyn, though a lot have gotten to be untouchable

if you find a good deal and can afford it, live in manhattan for a year... then move out to brooklyn or hoboken. i wouldn't suggest ues either. just a hassle unless you are right next to the subway.
if you really want to live by yourself, you can find places in greenpoint, astoria, lic that aren't too too expensive.
the hardest part about moving here is trying to find an apartment. i stayed at a hostel for a week until i found a place (doesn't usually happen that fast). i looked at as many places as possilbe everyday, all day. it got really frustrating looking at a lot of crappy places, but when i found my place, i knew it was the apt i wanted right when i walked in. if you find a place you really like, chances are it won't be available long... it could be gone in an hr. don't rush, but don't hesitate either if you really love it... especially if you're looking in manhattan.
^and as scud says, there is always jersey city. not as good a place to hang out as parts of brooklyn or hoboken, but very easy to get to wall street on the path.

Honestly - I'm 27 and I'd rather hang out in the chill areas of Jersey City then trying to hang out with a younger/clubby crowd in Hoboken or Manhattan.
This is sorta the breakdown...the hippy/artsy types go to Brooklyn. The singer/actor aspires go to Queens UES tends to be just outta college types that have a midtown job and like to party LES are again artsy faggy types that are just outta college(or NYU).
Hoboken has a ton of Wall St. and people who got in before it got too expensive JC tends to have a lot of internationals. 10/4/2007 11:46:50 PM |

my husband worked down at the wall street area and he lived in a apartment in stuyvesant town with a roommate. essentially anywhere in manhattan is gonna cost a fortune, but it will be easier to commute to work most likely.
good luck 10/5/2007 6:28:15 AM |

^^ this breakdown sucks.
Brooklyn is filled with completely different people depending on where you go. And even then its filled with 30 something yuppie families with kids until you go into crown heights, sunset park and bed stuy.
Check out cobble hill, carroll gardens, park slope, brooklyn heights, fort greene, clinton hill and boerum hill if you like brownstones and families with a decent bar scene and lots of trees and parks. You will be spending around 1000 or over depending where you are for a bedroom in a 2 or 3 bed apartment.
crown heights and bed stuy have some great brownstones as well but not as safe and alot cheaper but further away. Sunset park and Kennsington also have some nice stuff and are cheap and pretty safe. Lots of asians live in sunset park/boro park area. You can get a huge 3 bed for around 1500-2000 if you're lucky.
Williamsburg/east williamsburg and bushwick were/still kinda are filled with assloads of hipsters and idiots. Lots of fuckin puerto ricans too. Bushwick isnt very save but if you like industrial lofts its the way to go.
Dumbo is fuckin expensive and stupid
if you end up wanting to live in brooklyn let me know because i spend alot of time here and have a good feel if you're getting ripped off for an apartment. Its not exactly cheapest but its great and you wont be dealing with tourists for the most part. I live by grand army plaza in park slope and my commute is around 20-25min to the broadway/lafayette stop. Thats door to door.
also the lower east side and east village is not all art fags. lots of suits as well. None of the arty people can afford it so just just bus in from way out in brooklyn and queens and jersey to get trashed and puke on shit. and living in manhattan doesnt make your commute faster to wall st. Brooklyn is much closer than the UWS, UES and Harlem.

the thing about yankees is that, according to them, everyone else is wrong and they're always right. this is true no matter what the statements have been made. 10/5/2007 3:06:35 PM |

I don't think if you live in the financial district that you would want to make the haul all the way to 96th Street. The A Train can be scary at night as well. Personally, I would live somewhere near NYU. 10/5/2007 4:22:24 PM |

If you're gonna work on Wall St. and you are willing to spend a bit extra try and find something in lower Manhattan and walk to work. Upper East Side sucks balls 10/5/2007 4:28:29 PM |

This thread reminds me of this weeks episode of How I Met Your Mother where those sluts say they are from NY when they actually live in Jersey. Nobody likes a pretender. If you are gonna do it....DO IT RIGHT SON! 10/7/2007 12:57:42 AM |

^^ WEST ORANGE!!!!!!
but seriously, Jersey City is pretty cool.
also craigslist is your best friend. Look around and see what looks affordable and then check to see if you like the area. Things change on a block to block basis so somewhere thats nice can get shitty really fast. 10/8/2007 8:29:49 AM |
