yep. i was in one of those. in my 2nd grade class there were X number of 2nd graders and X number of first graders. don't remember why we did that though. my cousin teaches that same kind of class in carteret co.

the more i think about it, i think it had to do with kids on a fast track for AG.

So it's just a mixed-grade class? My Montessori school had those, as most do. Grades 1-3 are in one classroom, then 4-6 are in another.

I'm guessing they held back the slow ones.

in our class it was ~18 2nd graders and ~10 1st graders, and we weren't held back. if anything the 1st graders were pushed forward.

a lot of times they will mix grades in schools. sometimes it is just simply to accommodate
the best number of kids per class.

Mine was called a "combination class", I think 10 or so of us sat in a second grade class as first graders. I'm guessing at the end of the year we would have had the option to skip 2nd and move on to third, but I don't recall anyone who did (or whose parents made that choice if it was offered).

The end result of this was that I hated 2nd grade because I'd done the majority of the stuff already.

Yeah for both my first and second grade classes, I was in the classes of smarter first graders/slower second graders and smarter second graders/slower third graders.

when i was in florida they called it tk1 but a lot of my nc friends said it was y5
the kids i knew who went were usually the ones who had barely turned 5 by the cutoff when starting school

well see, in English, we have two sorts of letters: upper-case and lower-case

t=T
a=A

thus, ta=TA
