They are a type of shellfish. They start out really tiny and on the surface of beaches and such, then they grow down into the ground with the shell part sinking lower and the shaft growing up to like 4 feet or something. And at the base of the shell they have little squirters that pee.

I watched a show on PBS one time called "duckumentary" that was about these things. It was interesting and hilarious. Geoducks are fucking gross though.

Yes, its an animal. Its a bivavle, like a clam. Dirty Jobs did an episode with geoducks. That was a funny episode, being that Mike Rowe is such a perv!

How can they be gross? They're an important part of the ecosystem. They're like a big liver - living filters.

they're role in the ecosystem doesn't mean they can't be gross. they look gross as hell.
