I almost got into an accident yesterday... so it made me wonder... If the center black line is a median, the blue car is making a U-turn, and the red car is turning right, who has right of way? There is no stoplight, and the red car has a stop sign.

^^ wow, I'm surprised it took so long for someone to ask. I'm going to refrain from answering - I know if I say I was driving one of them, you all will say the other had right of way, b/c you are assholes.

omfg, ok. I was the red car. I'm pretty sure I had right of way. But now everyone will say the blue car had right of way, just to spite me. I hate all of you, in advance.

blue car had right of way

red car had a stop sign

blue car was already out in the main flow of traffic

whoever's out there has the right of way

now if there were a stoplight and u-turn had green arrow and right turn had green solid, right turn would have right of way.

i would say the blue, because red was at a stop sign and the point of being at a stop sign is to make sure you are in the clear from the right of way traffic...plus, you shoulda payed attention to the car that was making the uturn...not trying to be mean, but you shoulda realized pretty quickly he was making a u turn rather than a left turn

red car has right of way

blue yields to the oncoming traffic while red can merge in with oncoming traffic

^^ he didn't even have a turn signal on. Also, he was way out in the intersection like he was making a 90deg, not far over like he was making a 180deg.

^^^ looked more like:

well the turn signal thing is just him being a horrible driver (or something is messed up, my signals currently do not work due to a blown fuse)

but the fact that he's in the intersection is just one more reason blue car yields

right of way goes to the drivers who can safely enter the intersection. red car can enter more safely than the blue car can do a u-turn

this exact situation happens almost daily in front of my old neighborhood

i asked one of my friends (who, incidentally, is w/ cary PD) and he said u-turn would have right-of-way.

^^ if true i stand corrected maybe they consider the u-turn to already be in the intersection and therefore have right of way. that actually makes sense to me now

The blue car has to yield. if you were the red car, you would expect the blue car to be making a left turn. You don't wait for someone to make a left turn onto your street if you are making a right....

Quote :
" When the protected left-turn movement of a GREEN ARROW is accompanied by a
simultaneous overlap display of a right-turn GREEN ARROW and a median exists
adjacent to the left-turn lane(s), a “U-TURN YIELD TO RIGHT TURN” sign (R10-16)
shall be used and mounted adjacent to the left-turn signal head. If more than one left-turn
signal head exists, then the “U-TURN YIELD TO RIGHT TURN” sign (R10-16) shall be
mounted adjacent to the signal head closest to the median (serving the inner-most turn
lane).
Support:
At some intersections with a physical median (barrier wall, monolithic island, grass
island, etc.), the potential exists for some traffic in the left-turn lane to make a U-turn movement.
When this U-turning traffic moves on a left-turn GREEN ARROW, a conflict could be
encountered if the adjoining street has a right-turn GREEN ARROW, which displays as an
overlap simultaneously with the left-turn movement. In case of such conflict, the right-turn
movement has right of way over the U-turn movement.
Guidance:
When the protected left-turn movement of a GREEN ARROW is accompanied by a
simultaneous overlap display of a right-turn GREEN ARROW and there is a high potential for a
U-turn movement, a “U-TURN YIELD TO RIGHT TURN” sign (R10-16) should be used and
mounted adjacent to the left-turn signal head, even if the median is a double yellow line or part
of a two-way left-turn lane.
An existing “U-TURN MUST YIELD” sign (R3-27) may be used in place of the “U-
TURN YIELD TO RIGHT TURN” sign (R10-16) for the remainder of its useful service life.

blue car. It's the one in traffic. Same as if the blue car was making a left turn and the person in the red car was making a left turn as well.
