I'm running a ~2003 computer with a version of XP that I am not sure is licensed or not. A small store overhauled the system a couple of years ago and I don't remember him charging for windows.

When I try to get any program to play a DVD it says "unable to play because windows is either missing codec or the video drivers are out of date."

What will happen if I attempt to use Windows update if the OS is illicit?

Can you guys give me some tips on how to get going here?

What free programs/codec do you use to play DVDs?

The video card is NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

Artisan DVD/DivX Player 3.37

free.

and yeah, if you start updating your OS and it's not a genuine key, you'll get some popups about it. Bill wont knock on your door though, i promise.

having plenty of codecs is always good. get k-lite. if you have xp pro or media center, odds are you can still use window updates on an illicit copy. if your copy is registered as a student copy, then updates will work fine, with no hassle from wga.

Because once you have codecs installed on the system, all your media players should pick it up.

Winamp should play your DVD/divx movies too, now.
