ok so wtf, i thought this was a wrigley tradition? what kind of dumb homo or dyke throws back a HR ball in the ALCS? Cleveland is supposed to be old school, i didnt know they were biters.
am i way off base here, is this more than a wrigley tradition or am i right and they are biters?
my friend compares it to everyone copying duke(were they first or just most popular, i'm not sure) by jumping up and down. 10/16/2007 10:38:10 PM |

I'm not sure where it originated, but that's pretty much common practice across MLB. If a visiting player homers, you throw it back. 10/16/2007 10:44:33 PM |

thats like saying every applause ever made was copying whoever first thought "i like this..i shall smack my hands together to make a noise so they will know i enjoyed their program" 10/16/2007 10:56:21 PM |

I've noticed that when the fans don't particularly like something or someone they see, they make this stretched out "boo" sound. Where'd they steal this gem from? 10/16/2007 11:01:33 PM |

have you ever heard of the reynolds rowdies? if so then you know where Duke got it from.
that and the beating adn waving of fold up chairs...the old bleachers were seriously like big drums, my dad said they would jump up and down and stomp on them because they made it so much louder.
teams HATED playing in Reynolds, and its bigger than Cameron Indoor anyways 10/16/2007 11:04:46 PM |

yea i know about the waving of the chairs but i sat in the reynolds student section alot when i was younger and dont remember that

It is definitely a Wrigley tradition... Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. baseball is not the kind of environment where people should get their panties in a wad over "stealing traditions." Some are clearly a universal baseball attitude that someone simply did first (throwing the ball back at Wrigley or "Take Me out to the Ballgame" with Caray in Chicago) and then there are some that are locale specific and are stupid to copy (like "Sweet Caroline" in Boston, "Start Spreadin' the News" in NY, Sausage Race in Milwaukee, etc). 10/16/2007 11:11:51 PM |

Wisconsin football fans have been doing it for as long as i can remember (probably early 90's) but I am by no means a duke fan base expert (what a title to have).10/17/2007 8:31:45 AM |

Not necessarily true. It really just depends on the situation, stadium, and the crowd. I've been to Braves, Brewers, Royals, and Giants games where a homer was hit by the opposing team and no one threw a ball back. Obviously it does happen in other stadiums than Wrigley, but not always.
I sure as hell wouldn't throw back a homerun ball regardless who hit it. Well maybe if it was hit by a Met, I'd hold on to it and then throw it at an outfielder when they the Mets got back in the field.

Well, b/c the Cubs have sucked donkey penis for like 100 years, all the fans in the outfield were tired of lugging all the visiting teams homerun balls around. So out of necessity they started throwing them back. Now you know the rest of the story..... 10/17/2007 10:04:31 AM |

the guy was holding a beer in one hand so he was probably feelin pretty good... and i would have done the same thing. after an inning the indians just had you dont want the fans to let a hr get to them. he kept the crowd in it and with that kind of arm i would have launched it too. 10/17/2007 11:19:20 AM |

Sure
People are willing to go to jail because they beat down a person who didn't throw back a baseball hit by an opposing player.
Honestly think about that. Most people might boo you, but they'd get over it. Fuck them. Plus they can try and beat me up. I'm stronger than most guys, built better than most guys, and if some big dude did come at me, I'd just wheel back and bust his face with a fastball. Then I'd pick the ball up, wipe off the blood, and still not throw it back on the field.
