And so the clock starts and the taillights flare, and they're off again, strapped down, fueled up, and bound on an outlaw enterprise with 2,795 miles of interstate and some 31,000 highway cops between them and the all-time speed record for crossing the American continent on four wheels.

The gear is all bought and loaded. Twenty packs of Nat Sherman Classic Light cigarettes, check. Breath mints, check. Glucose and guarana, Visine and riboflavin, Gatorade and Red Bull, mail-order porta-pissoir bags of quick-hardening gel, check.

Randolph highway patrol sunglasses, 20-gallon reserve fuel tank, Tasco 8 x 40 binoculars fitted with a Kenyon KS-2 gyro stabilizer, military spec Steiner 7 x 50 binoculars, Hummer H1-style bumper-mounted L-3 Raytheon NightDriver thermal camera and LCD dashboard screens, front-and-rear-mounted sensors for a Valentine One radar/laser detector, flush bumper-mount Blinder M40 laser jammers, redundant Garmin StreetPilot 2650 GPS units, preprogrammed Uniden police radio scanners, ceiling-mount Uniden CB radio with high-gain whip antenna. Check. Check. Check

I think I just had an orgasm. Like multiples. And the pee shudders.

This is killin' me. I think I want to do a mid '80s Caprice Estate wagon build with a wicked LS1/6 speed combo, Vette third member and rear suspension setup, custom lowered double wishbones in the front, rack and pinion steering, and all that shizz. Oh shit. Calling all Garage Ratz...

so... roughly one cop for every 500ft of highway.

probably not the picture I want in my head when I'm trying to imagine a free nation

For a B rated movie, it had some pretty serious names in it: Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Terry Bradshaw, Jackie Chan, Peter Fonda, Jamie Farr (Klinger on M*A*S*H), and -- for all the motorheads -- Brock Yates.

I remember seeing this in the theater. My mom and one of her friends took a group of us. I was never so embarrassed to have to sit next to them. Funny...

yeah, my mom wanted to see Knocked Up so I took her. That was more than a little uncomfortable. Although I did laugh when she leaned over halfway through the movie and asked me what "mushrooms" were.

I'd also like to point out that, in the above video, Burt Reynolds lands the aircraft in Covington, Georgia which is where the first 5 episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard were filmed. As a matter of fact, you can briefly see the courthouse and the Western Auto that both showed up in those early episodes.

You know, for those of you who care.

We got HBO really early on, like 1981 and Cannoball Run and Cannonball Run 2 were on ALL the time the first few years along with Chariots of Fire, Canary Row and Under the Rainbow

^^ California. I've been to Covington, it really doesn't look much different from the time the movie was filmed there. The original Boar's Nest is now a church

In The Heat of the Night was also filmed there and the Covington, Ga CoC has a brochure showing all the places from both.

Here's an interesting followup/counterpiece to the Wired article if anyone actually cares.
