is my2cents really that lost?

rich people have a thing called insurance so they aren't LOSING anything. Their homes will all be replaced. Losing your house is not ok when you don't get a new house to replace it and its even worse when you have no means of getting a new house and go homeless, and its even worse if you actually had some type of insurance, worked hard and STILL lost everything for good because of a flood clause in your policy.

If losing a few items is devastating to you then you are materialistic and need to rethink whats important.

Where are we at in society?

If you own a home and don't have insurance then you are a dumbass. So regardless of how well off someone is, if they own a home, it should be insured.

Problem is, losing your home is still devastating, even if you come out ahead financially. Sure, it's not the worst thing in the world, but it sucks. Insurance companies don't go out and find pictures of your ass in kindergarten or shit your mom got you before she died or whatever. Some things can't be replaced.

Just to clairify, as I mentioned in another thread, getting fire insurance in Malibu is next to impossible. So what goes, goes... And another thing about insurance here....they have to actually agree to pay and I can tell you personally, that having lived through the Earthquake of 94 here, the insurance companies did everything they could to NOT pay. We were lucky, we only had to replace our entire chimney, have 3 rooms totally recarpted, have our back wall redone, replace a huge salt water fish tank, and other little things like cracks etc....We had to pay a fairly large deductible (not sure what it was but easily it could have been $10,000-$20,000) AND we couldn't live in our house for a few weeks. And like I said, we were lucky.

And think of all the shit that CAN'T be replaced when there's a fire. I mean an earthquake breaks shit but fires destroy it. Think of all the documents and mementos and pictures and everything else. Money can't replace that shit so it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, you lose it and you never get it back.

Not EVERYONE in Malibu has 2 or 3 houses, some people save up their entire lives to buy a dream house so I'd say that's pretty shitty.

My aunt, uncle, and cousings got evacuated from their house yesterday.
I garuntee you that they would be devastated if they loose everything. Sure, they can probably afford to buy a new house (with loans like every damn person on this planet), but they will still have lost everything. Guess what, they worked their asses off to get to where they are. Just because they worked, and don't flip burgers doesn't mean that they won't suffer.

Howard-You are an asshole, and apparently have no idea of real life.

at the end of the day, things are still things and if you value objects more than human life you have a problem. Most people on here would rather save their dog than a stranger and there are probably many people on here that would rather save their stuff and thats SAD.

^and you imply that flipping burgers isn't work. income and wealth are not directly proportional to how hard you work so throw that argument out the window

assuming they aren't dumb individuals, they had to know the fire risk of living where their homes are and they chose to live there.

not if their dream is to buy a house on natural fire grounds

ya, no idea of your life, no idea of the selfish me-mentality thats killing america

Yeah, the selfish me-mentality, you dumb ass.
I along with a lot of people on here work for (comparative) pennies a day to teach children, aka the future of tomorrow. I do my best to give everyone an equal chance and offer every oportunity I can to my students. I hope that some day I can afford to live in a nice house full of amenities and luxuries. That is a goal that I work for, and I would be devastated if I lost everything.
I can't be to figurative with my typing, because I know you won't understand anything I say.

Actually, a fire that takes everything can ruin peoples lives. They don't just loose memories, and not everything can be replaced.

Your assenine comments prove that you are a terrible human being with no feelings for anybody but yourself. You are the Me-mentality that is killing America. You think of nobody but yourself. Have you ever heard the word Empathy, or sympathy?

Oh yeah, I probably spelled something wrong, bite me.

Lets also not forget loss of use where insurance pays for your place while you're gone and self-appraisal of priceless goods.

^Misspelling words are one thing but constantly misspelling lose is another. I guess those kids, and our future "loose".

Quote :
"future of tomorrow"

o i get it. the kids of tomorrow will teach their kids not to learn from people like you? thus you are helping the future of tomorrow

Quote :
"Have you ever heard the word Empathy, or sympathy?"

yes and I don't waste sympathy on inconvenience or the loss of a favorite teddy bear or other events where materialistic people lose unnecessary materials. I empathize things like, starvation, death, poverty, injury/illness, and other, ya know, serious problems.

what the fuck are you talking about? who said anything about valuing objects more than human life? At last check there have been a total of 2 deaths and 100's of homes lost due to these fires so I guess that disproves your theory.

Um, well, sure, just like every person who plants their trailer right in 'tornado alley' or every person who lives in Florida, or people that live near rivers....and at last check, the 'rich people' living in Malibu weren't and aren't asking the 'public' for help to pay for shit. I'll rethink my position when the 'Victims of the Malibu Fire' telethon starts

I really don't get your point. No one is choosing death/serious injury over saving their 'stuff'. And you know what, I'll use your logic and say, YOU KNOW WHAT? THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T EVEN AFFORD TO HAVE A TELEVISION AND HERE YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING ON IT. BOO FUCKING HOO

do the people fleeing their homes have enough time to take lots of stuff with them in uhauls/trucks?

or is it like a 30 minute notice, carry what you can thing?

Well, there are the firefighters that are saying they "lost valuable time trying to persuade homeowners to leave" (AP article). I would assume those people were concerned with staying with their stuff.

rich people are not people too.

they don't get to experience tragedy or devastation. they're not allowed to.

damn them, it's their fault. they knew better than to be rich.

I don't know about Malibu, but in San Diego everybody is int he path of the fire, rich, poor, migrant workers. I have friends who are in Shelters, and at least one family friend who has already lost their house. I am sorry that California is better prepared for Disasters than other states, I know that there were so many donations of food/supplies/volunteers that San Diego county was turning people away at some of the shelters yesterday. Not just rich people there.

losing STUFF that you will be reinbursed for is not tragedy or devastation no matter who you are. THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT

rich people losing STUFF>=poor people losing LIVES

Quote :
"[quote]Um, well, sure, just like every person who plants their trailer right in 'tornado alley' or every person who lives in Florida,"

well i'm pretty sure in at least 90% of cases a trailer in tornado alley is not the owners "dream home"

everybody in florida? wow
