on a regular basis (every other week) the skin lining the inside of my mouth peels. Its kinda gross, little white/clear thin sheets of skin, but it doesn't hurt or last long. Its been happing for for a while so im used to it, doesn't seem like a big deal

I said something offhand to mom once about it and she said thats usually what happens to people when they are dying and the antibiotic therapy is no longer working.

Anyway, it doesn't hurt, doesn't seem like a problem but im not sure if its really normal or good either. Anyone heard of this, had it happen, know if its normal or indicative or something bad?

i think i have the same kind of oddity, my dental visits usually involve the cleaner asking if i chew the inside of my cheeks (which i do). i can sometimes scrape shit out too, not painful at all.

i don't get 'sheets' though.

It could potentially be the type of dental products you're using. Whitening toothpastes, particularly those with peroxide like properties, will cause the cheek lining to slough every now and again. I had the same issue and switched toothpastes. Now I rarely ever experience it.

For me, it was always the inside of my cheeks. Only on rare occasions did it happen towards the front of my mouth. I think the reason for that is that I'm hardcore about keeping my back teeth cavity free since they're extra groovy. I've been really fortunate over the years when it comes to oral health. The peeling thing has been the only real concern...and that was my toothpaste.

happens regularly if you use whitening products...happens a lot when using the Listerine (sp?) whitening stuff, or with whitening tooth pastes.

that happens to me when I eat something really sour/acidic. Do you drink a lot of OJ or eat sour candy or anything like that?

I drink OJ daily and use whitening toothpaste. That must be my reason.

FYI, I changed from Crest Whitening Expressions toothpaste to a different kind of Crest and the skin peeling has decreased dramatically.

So if anyone uses Crest Whitening Expressions and it really bothers you, you might want to switch.

I have these really sour morning sickness candies that I use whenever I feel nauseated and if I hold the candy on one side of my cheek, I usually end up with the skin peeling.

Cheek chewing will also do the job. If it is a chronic problem, you can end up with oral cancer from repeated 'injury' to the area.

Yup. Chronic cheek biting causes leukoplakia, white patches on the cheeks and tongue. While they are generally harmless, sometimes thay turn pre-cancerous, etc.

Due to the physical abuse from chewing food and saliva, the reproduction rate of the cells in your mouth is many times greater than the average cell in your body. Don't worry about it.

One possibility:

Oral thrush

Quote :
"Introduction

Oral thrush is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth.

Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. The lesions can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them or brush your teeth. Sometimes oral thrush may spread to the roof of your mouth, your gums, tonsils or the back of your throat.

Although oral thrush can affect anyone, it occurs most often in babies and toddlers, older adults, and in people with compromised immune systems. Oral thrush is a minor problem for healthy children and adults, but for those with weakened immune systems, symptoms of oral thrush may be more severe, widespread and difficult to control."

Quote :
"Signs and symptoms

Oral thrush usually produces creamy white lesions on your tongue and inner cheeks and sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums and tonsils. The lesions, which resemble cottage cheese, can be painful and may bleed slightly when rubbed or scraped. Although oral thrush symptoms often develop suddenly, they may persist for a long time.

In severe cases, the lesions may spread downward into your esophagus — the long, muscular tube stretching from the back of your mouth to your stomach (Candida esophagitis). If this occurs, you may experience difficulty swallowing or feel as if food is getting stuck in your throat."

Quote :
"Causes

Microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi are everywhere, including in and on your own body. In general, the relationship between you and the microorganisms in your body is mutually beneficial. You provide nutrition, protection and transportation for them, while they stimulate your immune system, synthesize essential vitamins, and help protect against harmful viruses and bacteria.

But your relationship to microorganisms in the world at large is more complex. Some microbes are highly beneficial, whereas others — such as those that cause malaria and meningitis — can be deadly. For that reason, your immune system works to repel harmful invading organisms while maintaining a balance between 'good' and 'bad' microbes that normally inhabit your body.

But sometimes these protective mechanisms fail. Oral thrush and other candida infections occur when your immune system is weakened by disease or drugs such as prednisone, or when antibiotics disturb the natural balance of microorganisms in your body.

These illnesses may make you more susceptible to oral thrush infection:

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. This group of rare disorders is marked by a chronic candida infection of your mouth and fingernails and of the skin on your scalp, trunk, hands and feet. Scaly, crusted lumps known as granulomas also may develop in your mouth or on your nails and skin.

HIV/AIDS. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) — the virus that causes AIDS — damages or destroys the cells of your immune system, making you more susceptible to opportunistic infections your body would normally resist. One of the most common opportunistic infections is oral thrush. Thrush is rare in the early stage of AIDS. It usually only appears if levels of the virus-fighting cells known as CD4 fall below 300.

Cancer. If you're dealing with cancer, your immune system is likely to be weakened both from the disease and from treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, increasing your risk of candida infections such as oral thrush.

Diabetes mellitus. If you don't know you have diabetes or the disease isn't well controlled, your saliva may contain large amounts of sugar, which encourages the growth of candida.

Vaginal yeast infections. Many women experience at least one vaginal yeast infection (Candida vulvovaginitis) before menopause. Vaginal yeast infections are caused by the same fungus that causes oral thrush. Although a yeast infection isn't dangerous, if you're pregnant you can pass the fungus to your baby during delivery. As a result, your newborn may develop oral thrush within the first several weeks after birth."

Quote :
"Risk factors

Anyone can develop oral thrush, but the infection is especially common in infants and toddlers whose immune systems aren't fully developed. In addition, babies can pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding.

You're also more likely to develop oral thrush if you:

Are an older adult
Have a compromised immune system
Use oral corticosteroids or antibiotics
Use a corticosteroid inhaler for asthma"

Just recently I've started chewing on my cheeks in my sleep. I'll wake up and have my teeth clamped still and I notice I'm biting REALLY hard. I have permanent indentations on them now. How do I stop this since it's a new thing?

haha TWW horndogs strike again!

are you a glassblower? cuz check this out:

Quote :
"Oral findings in glassblowers

Oral changes related to the occupation of glassblowing have been examined in 74 Danish glassblowers, consisting of 44 active glassblowers (Group 1) and 30 past glassblowers (Group 2). In addition, 15 non-glassblowers (Group 3) were examined. All three groups worked in the same department of mouth-blown glassware in Holmegaard's Glassworks. White patches of the buccal mucosa occurred in 23 % of active glassblowers, but did not occur among past or non-glassblowers. Histologically, the white lesions revealed morsicatio buccarum-Like changes. The lesions are reversible and should be distinguished from leukoplakias. The term "glassblower's white patch" is suggested. Furthermore black discolorations of vermilion border and front teeth occurred in 30% and 62%, respectively, of active glassblowers. Tooth fractures, mostly enamel fractures, caused by the blowpipe were found in 43% of active glassblowers and 19% of past glassblowers."

do you chew a lot of cinnamon gum? some people complain that they get this from chewing cinnamon gum. its unlikely to be thrush (though not impossible i suppose) as it usually isn't peeling of the cheeks but a white overgrowth on the tongue and throat typically and usually only in the immunocompromised.
