Royalty can only marry other Royalty. If she marries a prince, so be it.

b/c that's the way the British Monarchy works...if you're a man and you marry the female heir, you've got some power but you will never be titled King.

however, if a woman marries the heir to king, she becomes Queen.

isn't that fancy?

but he got all the fancy British Monarch titles like Duke, Earl, Prince and dropped his Greek title when he married her.

since the bloodline goes through Elizabeth II, her husband can not be king of england thus possessing more power than elizabeth.

As far as Charles goes if Elizabeth II lives as long as her mother than a good chance says that Charles might not live long enough to be king. Even if he does; b.c of all the drama around him and his horse wife they may not allow him to be king in favor of Prince William

So yeah, on the Prince consort thing...he's like the Prince Harry of the princes (unless William dies first)...so he couldn't have ever been a King anyway.

^No, Charles is in line first...then William...then Harry.

I'm pretty sure that if Elizabeth II had died before his oldest son turned 18, Charles would have become king.

It's not like they have any power anyway, all they ever do is use up tax money so that their lives can be handed to them on a silver platter.

prince consort is nothing like harry. Harry can potentially be king if william dies w/o kids. Prince consort Phillip can NEVER be King even if he was teh last Englishman on the earth. My mom is a English royalty guru so i know all this shit.

^ parliament; and public support.

nahh i think the monarchy in england fulfill a valuable role as a figure head and rational voice in english government. Due to their enormous wealth and position as monarchy they can have influence on issues and are not as easily influence by wealthy interests groups/corporations as the american aristocrats that serve in our nations highest positions.

so just to clarify on a few things...

if elizabeth dies, charles is king

if charles dies before elizabeth, william is king

if elizabeth dies before charles, they might skip charles and make william king anyway?

^^the monarch can give their spouse the lifetime title of Queen (or King) Consort, but the title dies with them--they will never under any circumstances become the monarch

Diana, while not royalty, wasn't remotely a commoner. Her father was the 8th Earl of Spencer.

princess diana although not royalty was a member of the english aristocratic class and of noble blood. I am sure grandma Elizabeth would not be very pleased if harry or William married a commoner although not law prohibits it.

A lot of controversy around Prince Charles marriage besides the affair while with Diana was his new wife's lower class background. This is why Charles did not marry her originally. If you are crown prince you marry into a marriage of diplomatic value and have your mistresses on the side.

William's son upon reaching maturity (18).

Back when the monarchy actually had power; an uncle like Harry w/ approval from parliament would have acted as regent lord until William's son was old enough to take power.

Regardless of the US's anti-monarchy attitude before the modern era; monarchy's passed down through the family actually supported government stability a lot of the time. Of course you always gambled on the attitude, intelligence, and benevolence of the monarch coming to power. You just have to look at the latter years of the roman empire to see how the lack of clear succession to the head of state cause a massive power struggle and instability within the nation.

^^^ The king is considered ascendant over the queen, thus if the heir is a queen, her husband can't be king or he'd rule the country which is not his blood-right. However, when a woman marries a king, she becomes queen and is still not the monarch. When the king dies, she becomes the "queen mother" while the next in the blood-line ascends to the throne.

this is a non-issue, no one outside of the line may become monarch--succession is by birth only

^ Right. Just like Andrew (Charles' next youngest brother) is after Charles, William and Harry as it stands now.

^ Dude, she's totally dead.

Argh. Wait, just look at the succession chart.

The Queen's daughter Anne would still be alive, yes? And also Andrew's children?

My guess is that Beatrice would be next, if you're just assuming the Queen's sons die.
