With as much preseason hype we are getting and how all of you people are soooo excited about basketball season, the RBC center better be PACKed to show our support for the team.

Todd Fuller led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in scoring during his senior year with 20.9 ppg and 9.9 rpg. He was an Academic All-American, and declined to accept a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford in order to play professional basketball. He was also inducted in to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from NC State.

Yeah, but a lot of other teams did so as well. Look at Kentucky's uniforms from back in the 90s.

I said in the other thread that Fuller was arguably a better college player than Hodge.

Fuller was a better scorer than Duncan was in college.

He was too slow to make it the NBA but he did play for a few years.

I don't know about that one. Perhaps for one year, but not career as a whole. Hodge is at least one of the top 10, perhaps even top 5 in terms of State's greatest players. Now by that I mean what they contributed to the program and how well they played in their careers. Hodge could carry our team and was a player from day one. You can just look at all of the awards he received and see how good of a player he was for us. He was the heart and soul of our program for four years, and the best example of this is the fact that his arrival coincided with us getting back to the tournament and that amazing game against UConn to get us back into the Sweet 16 for the first time in like 15 years. Hodge is only the third player in NC State history to get to the 2,000 point mark, and this all while in Herb's slow down offensive system that didn't lend itself to many high scoring games. Also Hodge is only the third player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to top 2,000 points, 400 assists and 700 rebounds, joining Duke's Danny Ferry and Florida State's Bob Sura. Hodge also set the school record for free throws made with 596. Hodge also has one thing that Fuller never had, ACC Player of the Year. Only the fourth State player to earn the award after Ronnie Shavlick (1956), David Thompson (1973, 1974, 1975), and Rodney Monroe (1991). Don't get me wrong, I think Todd Fuller was an outstanding player, but I think Hodge edges him out.

^^Well I did say arguably. And look at the teams Fuller was on. They were terrible, he never got a chance to win awards, go to the NCAAs, etc because of it.

Fuller had a better NBA career it seems.

just got back from the game. hickson looked incredible on offense. there were a couple times on defense when he was off his man. degand also looked to be the best of the pg's out there. johnson got in a lot of foul trouble and only scored maybe 2 points. costner was having kind of an off shooting day. overall though it was nice to see 10 players that were decent on the floor for our team at one time.

damn was just looking at the R/W box score on gopack.com. Hickson lead all scorers with 21 pts and was 7/7 from the stripe. That's really good news if he is a solid FT shooter.

^ also looked it shows McCauley did not attempt a single 3 ptr? Not sure if you are wrong or the box score though.

It's been said before but will be said many times this season: hickson is a beast, with the ball driving to the basket or slamming a blocked shot back in your face. I believe he ended up with 21pts or something like that and pretty much owned costner.

My observations...First the Red team:

Red

Hickson: He just confirmed what everyone already knew about him. He's the real deal. He's already ACC started material..the only things I saw that need improvement are conditioning and defense. Offensively as mature as any freshman big man I've ever watched live. Usually you can throw out Red/White stats because of bad matchups, but keep in mind he dropped 21 against the D of McCauley/Costner. Oh, and he can block shots. Like, really well.

Smith: Smith was upstaged by Hickson, but he put in the type of quiet and effective game that can really help a team win. He helped the Red team dominate the boards and tallied 7 rebounds. His 8 points on only 4 attempts and playing against Costner shows that Smith will likely be a very good player long-term. Smith has serious upside and great leaping ability, and it showed when he plucked the ball off the rim.

Degand: As impressive as Hickson was, I was most surprised and pleased with Degand's play. All the hype about his speed is real, and we're talking near Ty Lawson speed, but the impressive thing is that it wasn't wreckless. He pushed the tempo and only had 1 turnover really, and he seemed to know when to pull it back out and set up the offense. No dazzling passes or anything, but he seems 100% capable of filling the role that we need: a PG that can generate offense, set up the offense for the frontcourt, and take care of the ball. Absolutely the starter, and could cause tons of problems for teams with a slower guard (Duke, etc.). I can't rant enough about how impressive he was, especially considered that PG is supposed to be our question mark. He'll statistically have a bad year in terms of points, assists, etc. But that's fine. Degand seems to be an able ACC-caliber PG, and that's all we need.

Grant: Grant had a pretty good game but took less shots than I expected. I figured as the only senior, he'd assert himself more. Goodside: He's not being as stingy with the ball as last year. Badside: Still has fumblehands syndrome occasionally when he gets that look in his eye.

White
McCauley: Big Ben continues to impress and deliver quiet but good basketball. He works hard on the boards and it shows. He obviously was trying to increase his range and work on his jumper throughout the game(as was also rumored in practice, etc.) and I'd say about 75% of his shots were facing the basket and >10 feet...and it worked. He pulled Hickson out a few times and popped jumpers over him. It's the same old Ben with some new tricks. I like. McCauley as expected also dropped some nice Evtimov-like passes in there.

Costner: Costner was red hot at the end of the season. He came into the game and looked downright flat. He missed lots of shots that were mostly open, and he wasn't just goofing off either. Missed some 3's (1/5) as well, and generally got pushed around a bit on the inside. Tried to force the issue a few times, which usually works, but last night didn't. Finally hit his only 3 of the night near the buzzer, which it seems like he always pulls off.

Fells:He continues to be the most frustrating player to me. One minute he'll pull up a silky smooth jumper that makes him looks Jordanesque...the next, he'll disappear for entire minutes in a game. Oh, and he missed a sick windmill dunk that reminded me of Ced Simmons when he first arrived.

Simon Harris: Just wanted to comment on his athleticism. It's good. He can jump with the best of them and put in a very impressive performance for someone of his talent level. He won't get many minutes, but he could be a good role-player on this team. He clearly understands the game and has athleticism and hustle, but no talent. Missed some easy passes and turned it over some, but overall I was impressed.

Summary: Overall I was most impressed by the Red team dominating most of the game despite having freshman PF and C (in Hickson and Smith) and a new PG in Degand. The only starter on the team was Grant, who was only average. Still, they beat the more experienced team. That shows me that the starters everyone is expecting to be good this year better put up, or they'll be pressed for playing time. Everyone said this team could be great if they have a PG, and I really believe that we do. IMO, the problem won't be the PG, it'll be our lack of outside threats and general shooting talent. Our most talented players are the bigs and the slashing forwards. We should dominate the glass and post, and should take care of the ball, but streaky shooting could be this team's weakness.

After watching his performance yesterday, Hickson is exactly what this team needs in terms of rebounding and putbacks. And he can be a monster on offense if you can get it to him inside, some of his dunks were unreal.

Why do you say that? Points maybe because we don't need him to score. I would think there would be lots and lots of assists for him on this team though. What did Marques Johnson/Javi Gonzalez look like?

The only time I saw Degand try to generate offense was on the fast break. Other than that, he just got the ball up the court and made the first pass on offense. He didn't look to shoot at all in the half-court, and didn't really factor in by making cuts or trying to pass to a cutter or inside man.

Many of those things are good things. He seemed to know his role well, and that we don't need him to try to do those things. But it just seems like he'll be the kind of guy who gets 6 ppg, 4-6 assists per game, etc. and still be a good PG for us.

Johnson is notably slower than Degand (but who won't be?) but seemed to still know how to run the point. He is much more akin to Atsur. There's just a difference between a true PG and a SG playing PG, and Johnson shows it. He's under control and methodical.
