now explorer wont start, even manually.



safe mode wont either, until i start it manually.



i dont have any context menu/shell changing software installed.



repair/chkdsk didnt work.



can't uninstall SP2 via the control panel in safe mode.

I would just format. I suppose you could do a repair but it sounds like that machine was pretty messed up to begin with. I don't know if I've ever seen a xp machine reject sp2


Its probably not worth your time to try and find the cause of the problem
