^^^idiots

i'm telling you, it really should be a lot harder to get a driver's license, or not even so much that it should be harder, but you should be required to prove you actually know shit other than recognizing a few signs and knowing not to drive in the oncoming lane

I used to think that it was only southerners that had a problem driving in the rain.

Until I moved to NYC. Its like the fucking apolcalyse every time it rains here during rush hour. Fucking forget about getting home on time.

I haven't been driving today, but to be fair when it's raining so hard that your visibility is severely limited you should slow the fuck down. Maybe not 40 under the speed limit, but I'm sure nobody was going 25 on the beltline.

i'm not saying speed, but for fucks sake, 55 in a 65 in light rain is moronic

Unless there was a wreck, in which case there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.

I drove 70+ from Raleigh to RTP in heavy rain this morning around 10:00 a.m. I didn't see the problem.

Like I said, I haven't been out today, but I have been in rain where if you're going 70mph you will wreck.

In heavier rain, when I'm driving up a hill (FWD car) sometimes my front wheels lose traction...weird doing 65 on the interstate and watching my speed drop and RPM rise

You need new tires. This should not happen on tires with proper tread unless you're moving incredibly slowly.

more than a dozen motorists hydroplaned and crashed on highway 264 between greenville and raleigh yesterday

If you hydroplane and crash, you will be cited for speeding

I heard that on the radio yesterday

if you're too reckless to slow down in the rain, you should get a speeding ticket

thats not the point, people
you can still hydroplane and not be speeding

that is the point. the speed limit is posted for ideal weather conditions. it is posted because according to some engineer somewhere and some politician somewhere else, that is the maximum safe speed during good visibility on dry roads. your responsibility as a driver is to maintain control of your vehicle by traveling at a safe speed, if you hydroplane you have exceeded the safe speed and thereby broken the intent of the speed limit if not the actual numbers on the sign.

thats about as logical as it gets.

exactly

"speeding" means traveling at a speed higher than you're capable of safely maintaining, whether that's 80 in a 65 normally or 65 in a 70 when it's pouring rain

if you're too stupid to realize you're putting others in danger by driving too fast in the rain, you deserve the ticket

so you are telling me if im driving down the road, in the pouring rain moving at ~30mph in a 45 and crash my car b/c i hydroplane then i should get a ticket for speeding

that makes no sense to me
if someone IS driving reckless and is really speeding then yeah, sure...give them a ticket

Isn't there a ticket for driving too fast for conditions? Because I think that's what it would be.

Yes, "exceeding a safe speed", that is the speeding ticket you're recieve, not "exceeding the posted speed limit."

In my rundown and once almost totaled (but rebuilt) 92 Camry I got rid of last year I drove slow as fuck in the rain.

Now that I have a brand new Corolla I again feel like driving and weaving around slow people because I have so much more control of the vehicle

obviously it's up to the discretion of the cop...not saying it should be cut and dried that if you hydroplane you automatically get a ticket. If you thought you were safe doing 30 in a 45 and some unfortunate combination of events occurred and caused you to hydroplane and crash, I'd let that slide. 30 is pretty slow.

I'm talking mainly about the people who try to maintain highway speeds in the rain. If someone doing 70 in a 70 hydroplanes and crashes, yet ticket them. If a 400lb woman finds a pool tarp that's been fashioned into a two-piece bikini and wears it, ticket her. JUST BECAUSE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD WEAR IT.

this reminds me:

i was driving down wake forest rd last night in the left lane (of 3) and there was someone in front of me going under the speed limit (it wasn't raining at this point). i was getting a little frustrated and was about to pass the car, when he put on his left turn signal and started to merge over into the suicide lane.

i thought to myself "this would be the sort of jackass who would start to merge right back over to the right just as i pass him". sure enough i start to go past the car, it wants to get back in my lane. not because he was going to take the wrong turn BUT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SUICIDE LANE, THERE WAS A FUCKING MEDIAN THAT HE HAD DRIVEN RIGHT ONTO. i drove right on by because wasn't about to swerve into another lane of traffic because this jackass was talking on his cell phone while driving at night (the cell phone was seen by another passenger in my car).
