I don't understand how all those people died in a house with working fire alarms... makes me feel not-so-safe.

ok. Here's what I see. 6 survived, 7 died. 13 people in a house. Did the 6 that made it not trip over them or something or think to wake them up, or drag them out, or toss them out a window?

""We ran down the street to get away," Nick Cain told the AP. The University of North Carolina student was staying at a house about 100 feet away.

Some of his friends had met several people staying at the house that burned down.

"The ash and the smoke were coming down on us. We were just trying to get away," Cain told the AP.

one of my bosses has this story he always tells when fire stuff comes up. One night he had set the oven for self cleaning, but forgot to turn on the fan. The firealarm for the house goes off loud as hell. He and his wife turn off the alarms and go upstairs to calm the kids, who have a firealarm in their room.

The kids had slept through the alarm.

So yea, it can happen.

we have like 10 alarms in our house - one in every room & 2 in the 'great room' - plus and extra directly over the stove.

If you're up to code, how can you not wake up?

"Friday's report was based on interviews with witnesses and forensic evidence from the burned-out shell of the beach house.

Smith said investigators ruled out other sources, including the house's barbecue grill and outdoor fireplace.

"There have been no reports of any other sources of ignition within that area that could have served as a possible ignition source of the fire," she said."

"Smoking possible cause of deadly US house fire

WILMINGTON, N.C., Nov 2 (Reuters) - Smoking could have caused a beach house fire that killed seven college students, a preliminary report by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said on Friday.

The fire started on Sunday on the back deck of the beach home where 13 South Carolina college students were enjoying the last good beach weather of the season, according to the bureau's report released by the town of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

The investigation "could not rule out improperly discarded smoking materials" as a cause, it said.

The two-story home, built one story off the ground to reduce the possibility of storm damage, was owned by the family of one of the students.

Fire alarms in the beach house were activated, " according to survivors and witnesses, said the report. A final report will be issued in several weeks.

The small town of Ocean Isle Beach is located on a seven-mile (11 km) long barrier beach on the southern end of North Carolina's Atlantic shore, about 30 miles (48 km) north of the resort community of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina."

Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C. — All but one of the South Carolina college students killed last month in a house fire at Ocean Isle Beach had alcohol in their systems, the North Carolina medical examiner said Friday.

But the local prosecutor said he does not think it played a role in their deaths.

Dr. John Butts said six of the seven victims had blood alcohol concentrations ranging from .16 to .29 when they died. The legal limit for driving in North Carolina is .08, and Butts said the alcohol concentrations might have affected the students' coordination.

Brunswick County District Attorney Rex Gore said it was common for students to drink at the beach. Gore said alcohol played no part in the Oct. 28 blaze, noting that one of the students killed had no alcohol in their system.

Cassidy Fae Pendley, 18; Lauren Astrid Kristiana Mahon, 18; Justin Michael Anderson, 19; Travis Lane Cale, 19; Allison Walden, 18; William Rhea, 18; and Emily Lauren Yelton, 18, died in their sleep from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning, Butts said earlier this month.

All of the victims, except Yelton, attended the University of South Carolina. She went to Clemson University.

Six other USC students were able to escape from the burning house and survived the fire.

Investigators' preliminary investigation found that the fire likely started on the back deck of the house at 1 Scotland St., but because of the extensive damage, it was uncover for investigators to determine an exact cause.

It's possible, however, that the fire could have started from improperly discarded smoking materials, they said. There is no indication the fire was intentionally set."

.29 is pretty fucking wasted in case you didn't know.
