i have an '03 rsx-s, and every time i put it into 3rd gear it catches and grinds, i put it in neutral for a sec, and ease it into 3rd and it's fine again. it has plenty of fluid. i am in denial that my clutch is going out this early (just bought it in february), anyone have any idea why it's doing that? i haven't even gotten a chance to play rough with it yet

I hate to say stuff like this...but it's likely that third gear's syncronizer baulk ring is worn out. I'd be interested in knowing if it's a common issue with these transmissions.

I've noticed that these transmissions are kinda notchy from the get-go. Double-clutching on the upshift helps a lot, and I do it all the time with my Accord (I have an '03 with the K-series engine; should be about the same transmission). It just feels way too notchy for my liking if I don't.

i knew the old B series had this problem. they were notorious for 3rd and 4th gear grinds.

figured the problem should have been fixed with the newer integras.

cmon honda.

I always figured it was from hard 2-3 shifting

^^could be, but i test drove quite a few integras with 3rd and 4th gear grinds.

drove one a couple months back, an R, kid claimed the clutch was going out. so he offered to throw in a clutch for free. idiot knew the synchros were shot. he played dumb.

Put some synchromesh in it, and call it a day. Thanks baonest btw, for doing it.

^^ Yep, except it's 1-2 shifts on the S2000. Apparently cheap synchros were used on 1&2, different from 3-6. Mine used to do it, but it seems to have stopped for the most part after a transmission fluid change. I also don't push it quite as hard as I used to on 1-2 shifts though, I guess.

yeah, the S2ks are bad also.

so it looks like the synchro mesh did work.

you could always use that as a "cheap fix"... meaning it pretty much will hide the grinding.

It shifts smoothly once the car warmed up. It still grinds when the car is cold. Don't know why.

More resistance because of the thicker oil when it's cold. The baulk rings work harder to bring the gear up to speed when the oil is thick.

Not necessarily. What are you using right now?

I've actually used a mixture of ATF and gear oil before, but I seriously think it accelerates wear.

I use penzoil synchromesh (which supposedly is the same as GM synchromesh) right now.

Maybe you oughta try something like Royal Purple's Syncromax.

The GM Synchormesh is good stuff. A lot of guys I know with Hondas/Acuras use it.

Yeah, they do. But I think that the key here is thinner, with the same friction modifiers and a high film strength. Most Syncromesh fluid isn't synthetic, I think...

the first chance you get you should go ahead and overhaul the tranny....

these additives work good.

but will never solve the problem.

the second you put normal MTF in there it will get worse.

but as a cheapo fixo, i guess you are good to go

it's still all stock, it might be from hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd... on-ramps are just too tempting. thanks for the suggestions, i'll try some stuff and see what happens.

just want you to know you have to replace the whole tranny fluid with the stuff.

its not an additive like the fuel stuff you use, like 1 bottle for 20 gallons.

so you would have to wait for your next transmission fluid change.
or if its bothering you, you can just do it now.

when was the last time it was changed?
