Im trying to play halo 2 with some friends several doors down the hall, is there a way to play system link with them by connecting our xboxes to the jacks in our dorm rooms? I know my friend was able to do that with suitemates, but I assume its different when in a hall.

I figured that would connect them both to the same network and we would be able to play, but I can't get it to work. I tried registering the MAC address-number thing on the ResNet website, and did that for each xbox, after I did that I was able to enter the "Searching for system link games" screen on each xbox (Before it said it did not connect a system link connection). Even with them both connected to the jacks and registered on ResNet though, the xboxes could not play with each other, I'd host a game with one xbox, and the other one could not see it.

Also, I know that when you connect two xboxes together directly you use a cross-over ethernet cable, do you use the same one if you connect xboxes to a internet-jack thing in a dorm room? I tried both the crossover and regular internet cable and could not get it to work.

Thanks is advance

Probably just depends on how they have the network setup in your dorm. Who knows what/where your actual jack is routed, so the Xbox might not actually consider the room next door to be on the LAN.

Pure speculation on my part

If nothing else, you can use a tunneling program like XBConnect - http://xbconnect.com/

I use Xlink Kai instead of Xbox Connect. I found it to be a way more user-friendly interface, and there are still a good deal of people who play MLG gametypes (BR start). There are lots of people with good hosts/upload, including at least two guys with fiber-optic connections. Check it out:

it depends on whether or not you guys are on the same subnet as i think the system link stuff works by sending out broadcast packets which shouldn't be passed between subnets

you should be since you're on the same hall

of course i haven't worked for resnet since like a year ago, so i'm not sure if stuff has changed... but idk

Depends on a lot of factors, including what building you're in. Some of the buildings have multiple subnets, which make system link impossible if the two xboxes are on different subnets (which they can be even if they're next door to each other).

Please don't plug a crossover cable into the wall... most modern devices should auto-sense that stuff which eliminates the need for one anyways, but they can cause problems if you plug them into the wall jacks.

If you want me to look into it further, you can PM me your unity ID and/or what building you're in and I can look for more.
