I don't understand what makes one word "worse" than another. They are just sounds.

i never curse in front of my parents. i know a lot of people who do it "accidentally", but i've never had that problem at all.

although i did once yell 'fuck' when i thought i was going to catch the yellow light and didn't w/ my little brother in the car. i was pretty sure i was going to get mailed a ticket, but i did not. which was nice.

yea i'm not one to get all when i here a curse word or anything.

but i mean those sounds mean something. like "nigger" for instance.... that means something, even tho it is just a sound.

Anthropological research has shown that it is a deeply seated activity that predates any other language.

So basically, my monkey brain makes me.

Maybe I have Tourette's Syndrome or something. It's just a bad habit, I suppose. There's nothing quite so sharply exclamatory as yelling "FUCK!" when you hit your finger with a hammer. "FIDDLESTICKS" just doesn't cut it.

words are arbitrary and only have the meaning we place on them. so they're not really "bad" words.

My friends and I use them so often they're pretty much the equivalent of saying words like "super" and "maddening."

fuck yes

what I think is funny (and quite sad, really,) is that the very people who hold these words to be bad

are the very same people who give them their "bad power" by objecting to them in the first place

then these people, by avoiding cursing, feel they are "better" than those who don't avoid cursing

it is christian-style circular logic at it's best

iow, stupid

Quote :
"i never curse in front of my parents."

cookie?

I mean shit, when I was like 16, I decided that my parents needed to get over their opposition to my cursing

they wildly objected at first, but eventually, when they realized that I wasn't gonna stop

they actually considered my appeals to their logic and now they don't even flinch when I curse

fortunately, my parents are very bright and are capable of critical thought

so explaining the whole "curse words aren't bad" wasn't really hard at all

I explained that if they wanted me to not use certain words in their company

then I could demand that they not use other certain words (of my choice) in my company

I gave them a list of common words (not curse words) and began to object every time they used them.

pretty soon, my parents "got it" and agreed that we all could use whatever words we wanted around each other

words...

Yeah, they have meanings. That's the only reason that they're important and valuable.

It's pretty ignorant to say that they're just sounds. They carry meaning (both from the person saying that word, and from the person hearing that word).

Shit, Oxygen is just an element. By 'some people's' logic, since it's just an element, we would be just fine breathing Hydrogen....right?

point being, if you break anything down into it's most simplistic form, of course it means nothing to us really. But the truth of the matter is that we assign meanings and properties to things that are understood.
