Starts at 7am tomorrow -- the half marathon course and the first part of the marathon course goes from the fairgrounds down Hillsborough St. to the downtown area, and then back. If you happen to be in the area early tomorrow morning stop by and cheer!

yeah, another .3 would not be welcome.
i did the Myrtle Beach marathon last february, and i was dying the last 7 miles. They have each mile marked, of course, but after mile 24 i was starting to lose it. I saw a marker a couple hundred meters away and basically convinced myself that it was the 26 mile marker, and i only had just over .25 miles to go. Of course, i get up close and it was the 25 mile marker, and that was the most devastated I've ever been in a race, even though if I was being totally honest with myself I probably already knew it was 25 and not 26. Needless to say, that last 1.2 miles was a death march.... 11/3/2007 10:48:51 PM |

True. I'm no expert, and I wasn't in the greatest of shape for my marathon, but even knowing the end was near, it was difficult to summon any additional effort until the actual finish line came into view. Body just couldn't do it. 0.3 miles can be a long way. 11/4/2007 5:56:40 PM |

I agree, it was my first half marathon and I could've sworn the last two miles were misplaced (too long). Both my bro and I finished and are in miserable pain, but it was fun!!! I have to go to class today in harrelson and I'm not looking forward to getting to and from there! 11/5/2007 7:59:56 AM |

what are your techniques??
ive read a lot of about the interval technique.
run 7 minutes, walk 1 minute.
do that the whole time. some people say you will turn out a better time than running the whole race.
of course this is for people that do not run a lot.
and also it doesnt have to be 7 minutes, its just you run a certain amount, then walk a certain amount (usually 1 minute).. then you run again, and walk... 11/5/2007 8:47:27 AM |

Thats crazy the caliber of runner in NYC versus here. I just checked my buddyes NYC time and he too finished in 3:40, but was 674th in his age group. 11/5/2007 8:47:57 AM |

Ryan Hall ran 2:09 on the more difficult Olympic Trials course in Central Park on Saturday, and that after a pedestrian start (as elite paces go). He's the next American badass. 11/5/2007 10:57:15 PM |

^^^^ The run/walk method was devised by Olympian Jeff Galloway (http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/walk_breaks.html) and is a pretty popular method. I haven't tried it, but you hear about it a lot. I think really its just a matter of keeping people from going out too fast and running out of energy at the end..

I think that is gay, regardless of the result. It's running a marathon, not run / walking. 11/5/2007 11:05:18 PM |

uh, 38,676 finished the NYC marathon versus 826 people who finished the marathon distance of the Raleigh marathon. Some of it is caliber, but mostly its just numbers. If you're in the top 10% of runners here, there are only 80 people faster than you, in NY, there would be almost 4000 people faster than you.11/5/2007 11:07:14 PM |

For some people, it's not about beating other people or finishing quickly, it's just about being there and completing the race. Also, some other people are faster at sprinting and then walking a few seconds rather than jogging medium pace the whole time.11/6/2007 5:31:12 PM |

^^I'd rather run the whole thing and finish behind someone that run / walked. Walking doesn't take much effort.
Also, read about how Oprah ruined the marathon:
