he probably works 4 days one week and 3 days the next(12 hour days).. By taking off 3 days during the second week he gets off 5 days plus the 3 he took off plus maybe 3 the week before and then he works the end part of the next week, so he's off the 3 days the week after.

per my schedule I work 4 nights, 7 days off, work 3 nights, 4 days off.

So taking the three nights off gives you 14 days off.

for me its sat sun off, mon tue paid for xmas, 3 days vacation sat sun off mon tue paid for new years.

D = 7am-7pm (Day shift)
N = 7pm-7am (Night shift)
T = 8am-6pm (normally around 3-4pm) (Training)
* = day off

DDDD**TTTT*DDD***NNNN******NNN****

So by taking the three N's off I end up with 14 days off (even better this time because I'm getting Thanksgiving off). We have 5 shifts that rotate through that schedule.
