what does this sentence mean?
"The scholarship was created by the late wife of John Conway"

Does "late" mean that the husband is dead or the wife is dead? I am writing a personal statement for a grad school application, and I don't want to mess up.

This is the dumbest thread ever.

The hamburger was eaten by the fat wife of Joe Smith.

I DUNNO, IS HIS WIFE THE FAT OR IS JOE THE FAT? ENGLISH CONFUSES ME.

How the hell you are even applying to grad school amazes me.

sounds like his wife started it and has since past away.

they would've said "created by the wife of the late John Conway" if it was the other way around...

whatever, he went to NC State in the 70s and then died, a scholarship was created in his name.

[Edited on November 8, 2007 at 12:04 PM. Reason : only one person can ever have the name "John Conway"]

John Estes Conway, once again it isn't impossible for two people to have the same name

I would not apply to grad school if you don't understand how adjectives work.

why would you apply to grad school anyway, regardless of if I have any knowledge of adjectives

[Edited on November 8, 2007 at 12:10 PM. Reason : rethink your own sentence structuring before you try to cut on me]
