I'm not really sure why that wasn't a TD for UNC... he had the catch.
Not that I'm complaining but we got away with one by the rules...

^^^^i've seen countless plays on the sidelines ruled incompletions when the receiver loses possession as he hits the ground. i cant imagine its any different in the endzone instead of on the sideline.

I dont know all the rules, but I do know that when that player got up, I dont remember him bitching at the ref. Looked to me like he knew it was incomplete. And in the replays, the ball spits out so fast around the time he hit the ground, its hard to determine exactly when it came out. I say good call. 11/10/2007 3:44:47 PM |

speaking of refs, ohio state just got screwed and didnt get a review in on an obvious fumble, but that makes me happy 11/10/2007 3:47:35 PM |

Is this something new? Or some special point of emphasis?
Cause until this season, I had never heard this. Now, I've heard it three different times.
^^Yeah, I figured he never actually got possession.

i thought it wouldve been a TD if there wasnt a defender there since he had possession for a short time, but if theres a defender right in the play you have to maintain possession? 11/10/2007 4:01:42 PM |

if there wasn't a defender there HE STILL LET GO BEFORE HE TOUCHED THE GROUND if there wasn't a defender there they may have assumed the ground forced it out but it didn't 11/10/2007 4:05:47 PM |

The location of the ball is partially obscured by his arms and torso while he's coming down, but look how far the ball is away from him IMMEDIATELY after he hits the ground.
It had to be coming out before he hit, there is no way he established control. 11/10/2007 4:17:04 PM |

the refs were horrible, but at least they made shitty no-calls evenly for both teams. They let a lot of pass interference calls go when our secondary was getting burned, and they let our punter get hit by two people at once without calling anything.
I still don't believe the waved off intentional grounding went past the line of scrimmage, but it was hard to tell from where I was sitting. 11/10/2007 5:56:49 PM |

Yeah, like that no call on the roughing the kicker? Or how about waiving off the intentional grounding?

I don't know how half the people at the game were surprised when they called it back. The flag flew in while he was still in that area with the ball. Should have been very obvious not to get excited.11/10/2007 5:58:06 PM |

on tv, both of those were clearly the right call. on the roughing the kicker thing, the guy went past the punter and hte punter flopped on top of him. it might, MIGHT, have been running into the kicker, but even that is questionable from the tv replays. plus, i dont think we had less than 4th and 5 so it wouldnt have really affected us.
the grounding appeared to go past the line of scrimmage, but just barely11/10/2007 7:12:53 PM |

Here are the rules for a completion. Its pretty clear the refs got the UNC incompletion correct.
From the NCAA 2007 football rulebook:
Catch, Interception, Recovery ARTICLE 7. A catch is an act of firmly establishing player possession of a live ball in flight. c. To catch, intercept or recover a ball, a player who leaves his feet to make a catch, interception or recovery must have the ball firmly in his possession when he first returns to the ground inbounds with any part of his body or is so held that the dead-ball provisions of Rule 4-1-3-p apply (A.R. 2-2-7-I-V and A.R. 7-3-6-IV). 2. Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch, interception or recovery.
Perhaps heel fans take after their coaches. They both seem to not know the rules. However, with ole Roy, it gets him out of jams to claim he doesnt. 11/10/2007 7:15:53 PM |

That doesn't mean that I still didn't want the 65 yard punt return to stand.

I'll say it in this thread too. We have gotten a roughing the kicker penalty a few times in the past when we did the exact same thing.11/10/2007 7:54:37 PM |

just because the punter landed on the guy doesn't mean it wasn't a roughing the kicker penalty. You can't just slide underneath him and take his legs out on his descent. 11/11/2007 10:26:57 AM |

What about the block in the back on Bowens long KO return. I watched the replay on DVR and Armstrong did nothing more than pat the defender in the back. The defender was well on his way from overrunning Bowens. Armstrong in no way prevented him from making the tackle.11/11/2007 10:34:14 AM |
