We saw what happened when we tried to make Deraney do everything, he progessively got worse in each category. I'd rather have him kicking FG's. Let that Ruiz kid try punting some.

i went to my old hs football stadium and farted around punting for about 2 hours on sat morning early. i was easily getting 55+ yards in the air and usually an extra 10 yards on the bounce.

if you were getting 55 in the air that's really like 40 past where the line of scrimmage would be. which is actually good given our current punting situation. with enough hangtime they'd be a huge step up from pierson's performance saturday.

ironically, i posted on packpride about our punting failures, then came here and read this thread like 30 seconds later.

i guess that ruiz guy we have (who allegedly averaged like 45 yds/punt net in JUCO) either pissed TOB off real bad or he's just been sucking it up in practice.

During the 3rd quarter, when Pierson's punts were sucking, the announcers said that we were punting directly into a strong wind, so who knows if that held the ball up any or not. Plus he had to get them off very quickly b/c UNC was shooting through the line very easily for some reason.

i'm not holding the Carolina game against Pierson... A: he was punting into a strong wind during his worst punts, and B: our punt protection was horrendous, we were incredibly lucky that he was kicking high enough to avoid the punts being blocked, and at least one had to have been tipped.

Sure, someone like Rat can punt 55 yards (40 net), but can you do it with three lineman barreling down on you and within 6 inches of your person?

It looked like the punt protection was bad. UNC was getting 2 to 3 guys to him. I don't know if we changed anything, but that has to be fixed.

Pierson doesn't look that bad in warmups he just blows when it counts
